renfro's and papa bear adventures

Good to hear dunky. Anything u would do different? Hip waders or chest? How did u get meat home and how much? How far from camp or boat were the kills? Thanks

My buddy and I did an unguided hunt with renfro's in 14. We killed our bulls, had bad weather conditions and had to hunt our ass's off but got er done. Wade is a good dude.

update after talking to these guys;

Papa is booked through 2018...and not taking any more reservations

So renfros is over $8,000/ea for a drop camp moose hunt...and they are out a couple years ...thats if you can draw the tag the first year....many can't and it could take years to draw.......with a $2500 deposit now you can put in in 2018

There are much cheaper options than that, man 8K to be dropped off is an incredible amount of money for a very simple thing.

People are rapidly learning they can go moose hunt diy for 1/3 (or less) the cost of a guided hunt. That speaks nothing about their abilities or likelihood of success the first time hunting moose, but I think a lot of guys are willing. In return it seems to be getting harder to find an available transporter with good moose opportunities (air strips) who isn't booked solid for two years. Demand is exceeding supply I suspect, and I believe it will drive up prices in some cases. DIY moose hunting (via bush flights) may be a rich man's deal in several years.

What, i'm lying?

Spoke to the man myself last week.

I was making sure that i understood you correctly. I am paying wade much less than that but I am hunting this year. Maybe he raised his prices but it seems like a really high price increase. His website is still quoting a cheaper price than 8000.

You sure that you are not referring to sportsmans air? Renfros hunts out of unit 18 which you do not need to draw a tag for. The price that you listed sounds like sportsman air.

I'm very interested in this thread, booked for 2018 with Papa Bear earlier this fall. We are on the later hunt from the 19th-29th of September. Anyone who wants to PM me with advice or gear lists, I'd be very appreciative. This will be my first trip after moose or to Alaska.

A bit of background info, there are 2 of us going who have hunted and fished together for years. We have lots of experience on all size rivers in small boats from catfishing all over the Midwest. We have done a week long fishing trip in Canada fishing from a canoe and exploring with lots of portages. We have been successful on several elk in remote areas hunting and packed them out ourselves. I figure we know just enough to have somewhat of a clue what we are getting ourselves into, but not enough to do it right yet. Papa Bear has a 100lb weight limit on gear that you don't rent from them.

A few questions for those who have been or know the area:

What boots did you use or would you recommend? Any need to take regular hunting boots or just hip boots/waders? Would waist high waders be better than hip boots? I'd be interested in what brands you recommend also.

Any elevation for glassing? Would you recommend taking a spotting scope or is there a need for one?

How far did you and could you shoot? What are the longest shots to practice? Could you shoot from sitting or kneeling or did you need to shoot standing?

Did you have fire at camp? Is there a need for, or enough dry wood available to make it worth taking my Kifaru Megatarp, annex, and stove to dry gear?

Did you see any other species of game while moose hunting? Worth getting a tag for anything else? I haven't talked that over with the outfitter yet but will, just curious what everyone saw.

What did you take for food? I can live on Mountain House for 10 days, but my buddy that's going has trouble with all the sodium after a few days. We are trying to decide how much fresh stuff to take.

What rain gear did you use and how did it work?

Did you choose to rent an outboard motor? Do you wish you would have?

Any concern with bears there? Need to pack a handgun or rifle when packing meat?

Will they fly in to get meat if you kill one early? Will they pick up meat on the river or lake near kill site or only at camp?

How far did you have to go from camp to find moose? How far did you have to pack the meat?

Would trekking poles have helped packing meat or did you use them?

What did you take that you wish you hadn't, or not take and wish you had?

What other advice do you have for a first time Alaska moose hunter?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give. Hopefully some of my questions might help others get answers too.
