Hey guys Im lookin to find a replacement magazine for my rifle, when i bought it(used) it came with three mags, all "factory" magazines, the thing is that the spring isnt stiff enough to eject the spent rounds. Does anyone know where to get a better replacement or how i can fix this issue? anyone have this problem? with this being my go to predator gun i need those spent rounds to get out of my way!

Sounds like it is probably the ejector spring .The magazine spring just lifts the new round into line to be chambered.
I have 4 788's when I get home I'll look at one and see if I can't talk you through the fix you need.
I don't remember if they have a plunger type ejector or not.I will get back too you.

Magazine spring has nothing to do with the ejection problem. If you are lucky you may just need to clean the bolt head but most likely you need a new ejector spring. I would take it to a competent gunsmith and have him check and install a new one. If you put a shell in the chamber then pull it back slowly there should be pressure pushing the front of the case towards the ejection opening. If you hold the case strait with your finger you should feel the pressure from the ejector plunger pushing the case away from the bolt. If you don't feel that your spring is broken or weak.

Also , if the spring is the riveted in type I would definitely take it to a gunsmith because if you bugger the hole up drilling the rivet out the rifle is basically trash because you will need a new bolt at that point.

Ok so I just got home and looked at it again to make sure I didn't mistake the issue I was addressing and it is that it doesn't eject not the magazine. The magazine springs are all super soft too(even the new two) but I racked two rounds and neither ejected. So now what are the first steps to take? Take out the bolt and clean? Also have you guys had the same experience with the soft mag spring?

Just thinking , did you change scopes , mounts , or install target knobs on the existing scope ? If so check to see that the spent brass isn't hitting the scope and falling back into the action.

It's not, but good thinkin, the shells don't even try to come out and the second one stayed in the barrel until I tipped the gun backwards

Ejector or plunger. I can't say what a gunsmith will charge but not terrible. It doesn't take a lot of time or fitting. The spring isn't much and it can be done in a couple of minutes if you have the tools and knowledge. Clean it well and then take it to him so he doesn't charge you for cleaning it. Some smiths care about clean guns to work on some don't. There should be a pin sticking up in the bolt face to the side. If it is not up or just sliding around that would be the problem. Could also be the pin that holds the ejector claw out of place or the claw spring broken. None of these are hard to fix if you can get parts.

Sounds more like the ejector claw spring but I really would clean it as well as you can because it could just be dirt and debris holding the ejector open. Soak it and compressed air to blow anything out if you don't feel competent to disassemble it.

thank you guys, im gonna clean the crap out of it and hopefully that helps otherwise ill be calling a gunsmith! any ideas on better magazines with stiffer springs out there for this rifle?

remember you are dealing with a rifle built in the 1970's. springs will lose tension over time. not sure of replacements but brownells should have if anyone does. the 788 was my first 22-250 chuck rifle and it would shoot. always wish i had it back, not unlike every gun ever sold. know the first ones were $78.80 but mine was nearly 90
