Dang... This is hard. So many quality choices to choose from. the Kimber Mountain Ascent seems like the perfect gun. Its a little out of my price range. I'll just have to convince my boss to give me a raise lol. I'm trying to stay somewhat under $1,400. I'm going to sportsmans warehouse and cabelas tomorrow to take a look at some of these. Elkguide, I live just a little bit north of Salem in the Beaverton area.

The Ascent is a great rifle but I can't justify the extra $$$$ for the half a pound you save. All of my Kimber rifles are the plain Montanas and you can find them for around $1000. Now which caliber?????????????

I'm with elkguide on the Kimber, the Montana is enough of a good thing for me

Hard to beat the Montana 84L/M configuration IMO. Never liked the 8400.

Hard to beat the Montana 84L/M configuration IMO. Never liked the 8400.

Kimber has slimmed down the WSM Montana a bit but the older ones are "fat" feeling to me and just enough heavier to skew the whole process - I worked up loads for 2 84M .308's in 2014 but not until I was forced to rethink my whole shooting technique from the bench, lightweight guns are game changers in more than one way but once I figured out what I was doing wrong and what I wasn't doing at all I was fine, a bit frustrating up to that day though ....
I had an 84L '06 last year that I foolishly sold after working it up to shooting 165 Accubonds (I'll say) sub MOA and I've been so pee'd off at myself since that I know I will be getting another but I'll now wait until I can at least fondle the new Kimber model - TOO MANY CHOICES !

when I used to make at least 2 prairie dog trips a year my varmint rifle of choice was unwaveringly the Rem 700, never have liked them for a hunting rifle though I've tried ..... but that was pre T3 so now there's no way I'd ever go back

Having number crunchers involved in choosing which guns to make and gun manufacturing companies being bought as investments to bleed and burn has been a recipe for the demise of many quality firearms.
Everything about the R700 action was created with cheap in mind.
It is all round stock that can easily be turned on a lathe.
Cheap machinery and anybody with a lathe can play amateur gunsmith.
I'd look to Sako if I wanted something 'better' than a Tikka.
Kimber was a total crapshoot a few years back when it came to accuracy. Apparently they upgraded tooling and are more reliable now.

After trying them out. I'm pretty sold on the Tikka T3 lite or the Sako A7 roughneck pro. Both good rifles. I like the feel of them.

Also just a side note. Apparently the Remington 700 line and the Tikka T3 line are both getting retooled. They should come out with the new versions in like May or June.

I'm not exactly sure. I was talking to the Cabela's manager of the gun department and he said that both Tikka and the Remington Model 700 were going through a retooling and that they are expecting the new rifles in May or June or sometime before the season starts. I can't confirm the rumors so take it with a grain of salt.

Unfortunately Kimber doesn't offer a 7mm mag in the Montana.

YES they do ! Well, in the Mountain Ascent anyway BUT a Montana in 280 AI is as close to the same as a 7mm RM the only way you'd tell the difference is one more "down" and left over powder AND 5lb 10oz

I was looking at the Kimber Montana today. It was a nice rifle but something just didn't feel right about it. The stock felt a little awkward and I didn't like the feel of the action in general. I know that a lot of people love it and I'm not trying to hate on it. It's a good quality rifle.

Also can anyone explain the difference between a single set trigger and a single stage trigger?

Sounds like you might be listening to a "gun store expert" ..... a single set trigger will function as any other trigger unless you push it forward to "set" it in which case you do that and it's then set with a normally VERY light break - it is not something you would find on the average hunting rifle nor, IMO only, is needed - If I'm wrong in any way someone please correct me ....
a "single stage" trigger just goes off when it is pulled

I believe that a single stage would be contrasted with a two stage trigger. I've only had one two stage trigger and they are definitely different.

A single set trigger would be compared to a double set trigger..... The difference being two triggers on a double set. GK described the single set correctly. I have a CZ527 in a 204 with a set trigger. Handy on a bench shooting prairie dogs.

Ok thanks for the clarification. I think after reading all the comments and after doing a little more research, I think I'm gonna go with the Tikka t3 lite SS. I think all the rifles mentioned are quality rifles though. Thanks for all of the feedback! Now I need to do a little more reading and find me a good scope. Happy hunting y'all.
