Recommendations for weatherby stock

I've got a weatherby vanguard in 270 that has a chip in the wood stock. It still functions fine but it bugs me. I've never replaced the stock on any of my rifles so I don't even kno where to start. What do u guys recommend? And what should I stay away from. This is purely a hunting rifle so I don't want anything too heavy.

Where is the chip and is the stock walnut? take a picture of the chip.
I used to make custom stocks and it is sure a hell of a lot easier and cheaper to repair rather than get a new stock.

Weatherby Vanguard = Howa 1500 action. Quite a few carbon stock options if you want to go that route.

The chip is on the bottom along the trigger guard. I glued it back in but it doesn't sit exactly flush. I could sand it easily but I don't kno how well I could match the finish.

In the past weatherby sold their upgraded vanguards and even their mark Vs with bell and Carlson stocks. We had a couple of those years back, the stocks were good. In fact the vanguard backcountry (or wilderness???) we had was just a ceracoated vanguard with a fluted barrel in a bell and Carlson stock. I wish I still had that gun. The mark v ultra lightweight we had also had a bell and Carlson stocks.

I wouldn't trust the stock. If I were going to repair it, I would use something like JB Weld. I think the finish is something like verathane, not an oil finish. Looks to me like it's time for a composite style stock.
