Real world towing

3/4 or one ton diesel with an engine brake is the only way.
if I put 3 horses in my 3 horse trailer and pull with my 1/2 ton ram (rated at 8,800lbs with air bags) it struggles to keep up on interstate & highways and for get about going up or down steep grades. Same horses and same trailer with my stock one ton 6 speed and it’s scary how much better it handles the weight. Slows down smoother and accelerates faster.

Don’t tow long distances or steep grades with gassers.

I have no clue what you are referring to. Mine has no problem in the mountains here with heavy loads. Unless you're referring to 30+ year old trucks. Oh wait, you must be a Ram guy
*former Ram guy. I’m going to a Ford in May which feels dirty and unclean lol

I do a lot of towing for work in a 2018 3/4 ton gas GMC and personal with my 1/2 ton ram and one ton Ram. I’ve seen a lot and I’m just not convinced over distance and grade a gas truck is comparable. Any make or model for that matter.

If i was regularly towing stuff, i would get a diesel no questions. Lots of guys talk about the premium for the diesel, but they get it back on resale.

We've had dozens of diesel Ford Trucks since 2011, no DEF issues ever. We put 50-60k on each truck every year, regular maintenance, etc. Occasionally, there's a weird problem, but it's rare.

Seems like the issues with DEF are real, but rare. I think it gets a lot of attention from a few bad cases and the aftermarket people that want you to buy delete kits.

It does really suck fuel down.. That's a fact.

The 3.0 can tow 13,000 on the right setup. I know of 3 of them that tow 8-12k and do it well. The loss of trailer brakes would make me nervous, but that would happen in my 2500 too.
Unless they have stripped 2wd models they are most likely over not only payload but also towing capacity at 10k+.

I'd love to see one drag 12,000lbs up Blewett and do it "well".

I have a 22 F350 with 7.3 and it’s amazing until all the sudden it’s not but that line is very high. Well above 10k pounds and probably more in the 15k range. To tow 10k I would not feel much benefit to the diesel but at 15k it would be diesel all the way. It can do 15k but it is going to SCREAM up hills and be lacking power. I have no regrets in getting the gas engine.

Engine brakes on the diesels are huge improvement over gas. I don't care too much anymore how fast I get to the top, it's not being worried about coming down. I'm pretty routinely 32-34k with a 1 ton, doesn't quite compare, but if something happens to your trailer brakes on a 1/2 ton with 10k behind you, might end up needing a new seat.

The 3.0 has been 50/50 with people I know who have/had them. Few without issues, few with a bunch of problems, no real difference in use.

I don't have def issues on my equipment or trucks, buy they are used regularly. Intermittent use is what kills a lot def system.

Went from a F250 Power Stroke to a GMC 2500 6.6L gas. Towing my previous SXS on a 10' trailer with the gas was annoying. Just got a new SXS thats about 1000lbs heavier and a 14' trailer. Not looking forward to towing it any distance. It does it, its just annoying getting poor mileage and the constant shifting. Cruising with a trailer in a diesel is just so smooth. I don't tow much though so that was the reason I skipped the diesel this time.

You are going to miss that 6.7 diesel...I give you 6 months and you will be sick of that gasser. A pretty expensive mistake as compared to the maintenance and upkeep of the diesel. My 2024 6.7 has 475hp and 1050 ftlbs/torque.....7.3 gasser is a joke in comparison.
Got a build day email…April 28 for the F450!

You’ll definitely regret getting a 1/2 ton, and you’ll probably regret the gasser depending on how much towing your doing. Once you’ve towed with a diesel it’s pretty hard to go back.

I think the majority of my issues is the year build of 2011. That year, you can expect to replace the egr cooler at around 50k. I use it as a truck, not much idling or town driving. Trying to debate the gas vs diesel. My towing is mainly towing my boat to the ocean 20 times a year, 20 miles one way. The rest of time, just truck use and light trailer tow. I normally do around 250k on vehicles before getting another one.

I was scared of it, but keeping fresh def in stuff has helped. I don't always top it off, and I run as much as possible out before I put any in.

I had a scare, got service def system and it was counting down til 5 mph. Finally scanned it, isolated the sensor, actually looked at it and I musta hit a stick just right to pull wires from the plug. 2 bare pigtails, figured it was 50/50 on the right position, tho it was a temp sensor so maybe didn't matter, but pushed them back into the plug and it cleared sensor.

I'd be happy with gas for flat towing, and tell a lot of people to go with it. But if you are hauling in the mountains, the increased braking capacity plus the exhaust brake on modern diesels makes it way safer.

The newest model is rated at 13,300. Trust me when I say that I called bs myself. I have a 7.3psd, a built 12v and ram 5500 4x4. I have a pretty good understanding of towing. With all that said, the power and brakes on the 3.0 is very impressive. I wouldn't tow without bags.....but the go and stop is far beyond the half ton of yesterday.

And.....my coffee can ride in the cup holder, unlike my 5500.
