I'm shooting a '14 Hoyt Carbon Spyder ZT 14, 515 grain arrows at 29" coming in at I believe 260.

Significantly more important-bow is quiet as all get out, I can draw it during the bitter cold of Iowa's late muzzleloader season, and it holds like a dream. More than plenty fast.

I remember just before elk season there was a thread (which i cant find) , where folks were talking about arrow speeds with their hunting setups. Ive been using my same old bow madness (drawing 29" and shooting about 268fps or so with a 510 grain arrow), and i feel like i should upgrade (stupid), but all the fast ass bows seem to shoot in roughly the same range with that heavy an arrow. Thoughts? Numbers? Convince me one way or another if you please.

It’s a 2015 Hoyt Carbon Spyder Turbo ZT. Believe it’s a 33” ATA. Rattle can painted it myself haha turned out pretty cool!

I thought I would provide an update.

I shot a cow elk quartering to me. Arrow entered in front of shoulder (broke rib on entry) and exited just past last rib on opposite side. Arrow ended up 50 yards past the elk on the down slope side.

Arrow took out both lungs and arteries.

Total arrow weight: 540 grains
Speed: 267 FPS

Gold tip XT hunters with 100 grain brass insert, 25 grain aluminum collar, 100 grain day six evo broadhead and four fletch max stealth with wraps.

Cow sprinted 200 yards downhill and was done.

417gr arrows at 285fps

I get pass throughs on deer at 60yds with 2 blade fixed heads. Going to build new arrows and they will be 450gr-475gr and I may bump up my draw weight a bit to get some speed back. I have 70lb limbs on my bow.

The thing is, your talking to a bunch of guys, guys are notorious for having to have the fastest, biggest, prettiest, longest etc, you get my point. Even if they have to lie about it. So many go off of the manufactures ibo speed ratings and truly none of the bows make what they claim.So the figures are off from the get go. Truly need a chronograph to tell the truth. Again guys are not going to tell you they shot slower then they thought. At the archery range it’s amazing how many people think their bows are way way faster then they actually are. And 95% of those guys say the chrony is way off, and their math figure is correct. Any way, self made long bow ( hybrid) 168 FPS with a 480 gr. total arrow weight. 60 lb. compound 28.5 inch draw, same 480 gr. Arrow 243 FPS. and yes these could be off by a little +or- but its really close. I have not shot over the chrono. in about a year.

Yep. Just a little more pin gap.

My bows shoot 257 to 267 depending on the arrow weight I choose. I would have to shoot an arrow in the low 400 grains to get 280 and I don’t think it is worth it.
