Rain gear

Better safe than sorry and i'll usually take at least light rain gear. I've also taken at least a tarp like Justin mentioned when backpacking, especially if there is risk of hypothermia.

I always carry an outer shell. Rain/Snow/Wind stops them all, and is lightweight enough. It keeps me out there when others head for the truck/camp. Outdoor Research makes affordable lightweight rain-gear that works for what I do. It will wetout if you're in nasty weather for days on end, but for the normal rain/snow shower it works great. Has pit-zips to allow you to vent and dump heat when moving, and has 2-way zips to help when carrying a pack or sitting. Men's Foray 3L Rain Jacket
