No matter my position I couldn't get the quilt to "seal in an airtight way" on the sides and at the feet. It felt like cold air creeped in everywhere.

This is exactly why the Zen Bivy system was designed.

I believe bags and quilts both have their places. I picked up a Hyperlite 20* quilt this year and have loved it, especially on a hot overnight a week ago when I just ran it as a blanket. Coldest I’ve experienced with it this far was 20* with my Nemo tensor all season (5.4R), wearing a couple layers and a beanie it wasn’t bad but could feel some drafts and a higher R value pad would have been sweet. If it’s absolutely frigid (winter camping) and not running a hot tent I’d probably still opt for a bag. But all 3 other seasons the quilt is going to be sweet and saves some oz.
