So Recently I heard a story about 3 local hunters in New Mexico during an October Elk hunt and how a 10 days scouting & elk hunt turned into 3 days of torcher due to an infestation of chiggers so bad they canceled there hunt and went home to recover. so the obvious question is... Hello... is this common I'm holding an Elk tag myself so how does one prepare for that? Asking FOR A fRIEND...

I would suggest spraying permethrin on your cloths, boots and cloth gear. Works on ticks, and Google claims it works on chiggers as well.

Douse yourself with picaridin, and you're cloths with permethrin the night before. This flat out works, a recent trip in the brush of Missouri convinced me. Yeah, it will add a bit of stink to you, but better than ending a trip.
