Surley karate monkeySweet rig! What model is that?
I have a Trek Stache that I don’t ride. Found out I’m not a MTB person and it’s too much for a road bike.
Really want a gravel bike.

That's where the 12 speed rear cassette is used. The 1x12 on my gravel bike has problems with neither.I would hope not.
A currently produced dual purpose city/cross country bike needs a double front chain ring though. The 30 tooth of a cross country bike doesn’t work well on blacktop and a city bike with 40 tooth isn’t anything I’d want to use off-road.
Loaded touring bikes still take triples. It's the difference between walking and riding at a crawl up mountain grades with 4 bags. You think you could find a triple ring at a bike shop these days?
