That's where the 12 speed rear cassette is used. The 1x12 on my gravel bike has problems with neither.

Even my Domane has a 12 speed cassette. Its SRAM AXS reds and I have it set up to progressivly shift up and down but I dont remember the last time I needed the small front ring. Not in the last 1500 miles. It has 46/33 fronts. I could have gone with a 52/36 for better range but honestly the 52 is likely too big for me to pedal the bottom half except in steep downhill.

What the spread, 90 pavement/ 10 trails? Lot of good hardtail options with 1x12 that could do both with the right tire.

If its more trail than commuting I ride a steel frame Kona Honzo with a 130mm fork, if its more commuting than trail its a steel frame Kona Rove gravel bike. If its not super rocky the gravel bike does pretty decent on trails and is way faster on gravel/pavement.

Resurrecting an old thread...Just wondering what the OP ended up going with and a thumbs up for the Kona Honzo. Sweet bike! I was about to buy one, then Covid hit and couldn't find one, ended up going with a similar Canfield Nimble 9.
