I am way behind most of you as far as knowledge about a lot of things firearm wise.
This is the first year that I jumped in the Suppressor game also. Which I will say I wish I would have done much sooner.
I just now have one Rifle that is threaded to run a Suppressor. A 6.5 PRC. After shooting it this past weekend, I really dont ever want to shoot anything that is not suppressed again.

With that said I have quite a few rifles in the safe that I do like to shoot, but they are not threaded.
We have a local guy here that will thread but my question is. At what diameter on the muzzle is too thin or not big enough to thread.

I know I could ask the smith but wanted to get some opinions from you all.
I have the below that I would like to get threaded.
Winchester Model 70 300WSM
Savage 6.5 CM
Savage 7mm-08
Howa 270

All of these have sporter style barrels so not a large contour.
And I know the two Savages i could just do a barrel swap on with a Pre-fit. But it is quite the cost vs just threading.
So at what point do you say nope there isn't enough material to Thread this.

Congrats on entering the suppressor world. As you've found, it's hard to go back.

You won't have any issues with barrel threading. The smith will go 5/8-24 if there's enough meat or 1/2-28 for thinner barrels. With so many adaptor options like HUB, you should find a simple solution to run cans on all your rifles.

Another popular method that specialized gunsmiths use is installing a belled muzzle adaptor to provide a larger shoulder for the can to snug against. I've never had this done, but it's probably the best way to go.

My suggestion for chopping and threading your existing rifles is to go as short as possible I doubt I'll ever have a barrel longer than 18 inches, and most will be 16 or shorter. They're so much handier.

My opinion is you need a decent shoulder. Might have to thread whatever pitch they are able to and then rokset a adapter of your choice on. Or you could have kamfield do a nice flush looking adapter

Trust your gunsmith. Most of mine are 5/8×24, but i have a couple that my smith didn't like the lack of shoulder, so he threaded 1/2×28 and I use adapters. No ill effects of using adapters.

i have no experience with firearms specifically, but I have a bit with machining. I have no idea if your local gunsmith does quality work, if you have any hesitation, consider sending something off to a very reputable place. Plenty of folks on here have sent theirs to Kampfeld and from what I gather the feedback is nearly universally positive. Im sure there are others as well.

The suppressor combo of reduced recoil and less noise is wonderful and vital for those of us with severe hearing loss.

Karl (Kampfeld custom) is a good dude who does good work...I'm sure there are others, I'm just not familiar with them.

Thanks for the info.
Like I said above, right now I only have the one rifle that is threaded and its 1/2x28 and I just used the Muzzle devise from the Supressor company (Dead Air) and it works perfectly fine.
So I did not think it would be a huge issue, but something I had heard before so wanted to ask you all that have more experience with it.

Make sure they are charging enough to spend the time and center on the bore. A lot of old time gunsmiths don’t or won’t charge enough because they don’t think people will pay for it, and the center on barrel OD.

Few local to me.
-Hard to get ahold of, $75/barrel centers on OD
-Easy to get ahold of, $125/barrel centers on bore
