Question for dog owners

I love dogs but have a serious question for dog owners. I know many dog owners do not do this but... why is it that people pick up their dogs crap, then put it in one of those plastic baggies, then put it down on the trail and leave it there and dont come back for it. I trail run a lot and am always seeing those plastic crap bags (with dog crap in them), left all over the place. Am I missing something? Wouldn't it be better to just leave your dog crap on the trail? Why add a plastic bag to the mix? I feel like I am missing something but this seems to happen everywhere.


Any input or explanation to this phenomenon would be greatly appreciated.

When we hike a section of the trail that we'll come back through later on in our hike (like an out and back), we will leave the shit bags so we don't have to carry them for the whole hike. Typically the dogs will go once or twice in the first few hundred yards...so i'd rather just grab them on the way back.

Some people assume we don't come back for it, and we've been yelled at by people who see us bag it up and leave it for later.

Edit** for the people that do leave it behind (and there are those dog owners), it's just because they're assholes.

To answer why they do that, you would have to be able to understand the working of the minds of people that do that, and that is impossible.

My dog shits within the first 5 minutes of our run, I bag it up, set it down and grab it on my way back by. You could be seeing bags that just haven't been picked up yet from people doing the same thing.

I could not explain that if i tried. Only time i have picked up my dogs crap is in a city setting airing before we go to a test in the morning and i throw it right in the garbage in the little baggy. The other 99% of the time I am in the country so it stays. Have him trained to go out in the pasture at my house so never have to worry about crap in my yard.

What I've seen is people do that to prove to those watching they are 'picking it up' [urban areas often have laws about this since dogwalkers on city trails/sidewalks are numerous and the result is a real mess] - but then when out of eye sight, they just as quickly drop it. Lazy and inconsiderate for the most part. Many of our popular hiking trails in PNW are a minefield with pet piles too.
But yes, leaving it unbagged would seemingly be less of a littering issue [except for the sheer poo volume in some areas].
This season I was on a WMA duck hunting and a neighboring hunter and his dog came by; he and I were BS'ing - in them meantime, his dog walks into my blind and checks out my strap and then promptly drops a deuce in the blind. Dude looks at me, shrugs his shoulders, says "dogs will be dogs", turns and walks off. I did chuckle and I really had no other expectations; just kicked the pile to the edge of the blind with my wading boots. But I was not walking or jogging on a city sidewalk either.

I see that a lot on the busier local trails. I’m guessing that most are bagging it up because someone else is nearby so they look like they’re cleaning up after their dog, then as soon as nobody is looking they drop it. When she’s on a leash and on a busier trail and I see my dog is getting ready I just walk her off trail a ways and let her do her thing. Zero interest in hiking with a bag of crap in my hand.
