I used a MR fire pack years ago when I was working for the forest service. I recently picked one up off of the classifieds and can’t wait to get it out into the woods. I do a ton of day hikes in the off season and this set up works well for me. It will carry more than I need so I have to be careful to not overload it, just because it can hold it.

I have a few different backpacks and a lumbar pack (Sitka tool belt), and I’m curious what the benefit of the lumbar actually is? I’m just a whitetail hunter who doesn’t pack out deer, but I don’t see the benefit of a lumbar pack. If folks want something lighter why wouldn’t you want a small backpack? I think a pack is more comfort to carry, and with the lumbar packs you generally still have the shoulder straps, if not they are miserable. I do like the layout of the tool belt and use it time to time but once again, I don’t see the true benefit of one.

For me a lumbar pack is more convenient for casual hunting when you need limited gear and have another option for packing out. The lumbar pack generally has much thinner shoulder straps. It allows you to sling your rifle comfortably where usually the body of backpack gets in the way of the rifle sling and allows the rifle to sit solidly on your shoulders.
