So I have one of the most sought-after Quality elk tags in Wa State but I just found out today that I have 2 hernia that need surgery.

No chance I am missing this tag after waiting 19 years. So question is has anyone had this and know what the recovery time was?

Inguinal hernia? If so I had one repaired the end of April it was 2 weeks of not lifting over 10 pounds and then 2 more of nothing over 20 but after that there was no restrictions. I was shooting my bow a month after I had the surgery.

I delayed hernia surgery until after successful elk and deer seasons. I wore snug fitting compression shorts as underwear. I don't know if they provided any benefit but I had no problems.

Yes Inguinal hernias.

Might want to look into a hernia belt if you can put it off til after your hunt. That’s what I did but I wanted sutures instead of mesh which is a bit longer recovery usually. Never know what surgery recovery will be like….I have had good recoveries and bad

I had a belly-button hernia. I tried to put it off. I was hog hunting in Texas and ripped it pretty good. I got the surgery upon my return home. I had robotic surgery, out patient. The day of my surgery, I was in so much pain I wasn't sure they should let me leave the hospital. The next day, I stopped taking the pain killers. 3-days later, I was driving and meeting friends for lunch, dinner. 6-days later, I was back at work (I don't have a job that requires lifting). I was on a lifting restriction for a month. After 1-month, I was 100%... Just missing a belly-button.

I thought about putting mine off till winter and the surgeon told me a lot of people put them off till they have a serious problem but I figured with my luck I'd strap an elk 1/4 on my back in the middle of nowhere and have it get bad

Thats what I am afraid of. This hunt is going to be brutal, its in the steep and deep canyons with no roads and I have very little help.

I had one repaired last summer. About 4-6 weeks for recovery time. Day of surgery there was some pain, but it wasn't a bad recovery at all. If you can get it done asap, I would. If they're going to wait until August, probably wouldn't.

Just get it done man. I forgot what its called but the intestine getting pinched off and losing blood supply is the risk if I remember correctly. If that happens you'll probably be upset with yourself. My recovery was basically sit on my ass and dry fire my pistol while watching TV for a week, take it easy and avoid lifting anything heavy after that for about 2 more weeks and I think after a month I felt 100% but still took it easy so to not screw up the successful surgery. Good luck.

Ask your doc for their honest opinion. The surgery recovery for Inguinal hernia isn’t bad. I had one in high school. Made the baseball team via tryouts a week later, but wasn’t doing the crunches or sit-ups in the conditioning work for a couple weeks.

Basically I wouldn’t be concerned about hunting, but packing something out might be a big stressor. Your doctor will hopefully tell you it’s gonna be fine by then.

In Nevada if you’ve got a medical condition and can’t hunt you can turn the tag back in and get the same tag next year. You might want to check if Washington has a similar regulation.

Not here. I had this tag in 2015 only to have to turn it back in due to a forest fire. Its took till now tp get it again.

When is the date on your hunt? I have had 5 hernias repaired total. The last 3 were inguinal at the same time. Same restrictions for weight as mentioned by J Mundy. Once the month was up I was good to go.

A strangulated hernia is no joke… will it happen, probably not. Could it? Sure.

Tough call to make, but I’d be looking at making sure you had solid plans to get out of your hunting area if you had an issue.

Thats what mine are. Both sides.
I see the doc tomorrow so I will know more.

Do anything you can to take advantage of that tag. I'm 23 or 24 years in with not even a bull or quality tag. I guess I'm just an unlucky shlub.
