Looking to pickup a new whitetail rifle for GA hunting. Want a 7mm-08, not overly heavy, sub-moa and quality (i.e. good enough to pass down to my kids one day). $1500ish budget but could stretch if I wanted. Will likely pair with a Leupold VX5.

Suggestions on what to look at (new or used)?

Tons of good options for sure. First couple that come to thought would be Christensen Mesa, winchester model 70ew, and of course tikka is never a bad choice.

I absolutely love my Remington 700 Mtn Rifle in 7-08. Easy handling, fairly lightweight and old school wood/blue look.
I also agree with Forest above in listing that CA Mesa first. Never had one, but the Tikka would be a great option as well. I'm sure that Winchester would be great to, but I just don't care for their 3 position wing style safety. JMO on that though. nothing wrong with them.

My tikka 7-08 is the most accurate rifle I own, but one day I will own a wood stocked Sako 7-08.

You need to outline your priorities better to get a good recommendation. For me a nice stock is a priority, hence I would opt for something like a Kimber Select Classic (308 as 7mm-08 isn’t an option). Some may want a carbon barrel and go with a Savage Ultralight. Hard to beat a Tikka for a smooth action.

Most rifles nowadays are sub-moa, even a lowly Ruger American / Savage Axis.

I've owned one of these before actually. Loved the rifle and sold it. One of the ones I kick myself for.
Here you go:

That one is on my watchlist but I doubt it'll stay down there in my range.

I will go against the grain and say dont buy a Tikka. While they are great and you will find many people have great luck with them the 7mm-08 appears to be a hit or miss caliber with them.

I picked up a Kimber Adirondack in 7mm-08 a couple years ago. I threw a leupold 4-12 on it, just because I had 1 laying around. Worked up a batch of reloads and it's shooting sub moa. It's nice and light. Easy to carry around. The barrel does heat up quickly. If you want to shoot it a ton , maybe go a different route. Otherwise, I have absolutely no complaints. I've only shot out to 300 yards with it, but if I do my part, it shoots very well. No complaints. Will be suppressing it later this year as well. Best of luck whatever route you go. Cheers

I was going to recommend a few until I read "pass down to my kids one day" and then my list got real short.
Winchester M70 featherweight
Browning x-bolt
Remington model 7

Any of those should be worthy family keepsakes but for my money, the Winchester would be tops on that list.

Thanks. I've bought/sold/traded a bunch of guns that I never should have, just to do it. I'm now recognizing that buying quality, and something that I can pass to my kids one day, is more important than just constantly horse trading. I've never owned a Winchester but am leaning heavily towards the Extreme Weather based on comments here and elsewhere.

That would be a good choice. If you want stainless, Remington makes a good model 7 all-weather and their old synthetic mountain rifle was pretty nice too but I'm not sure they make those anymore. I had a chance to buy a stainless Remington mountain rifle in .280 Rem a few years back and still kick myself for not buying it. I'll probably never see another in my lifetime and certainly not a new one.

Personally, I'm a Winchester fan when it comes to handing down firearms. My son will get my pre-64 model 94 30-30 and my daughter is getting a model 57 Winchester bolt action .22 from me. They have already claimed them. LOL

Maybe someone has a fieldcraft In 7-08 they're willing to part with. That would be my first choice
