Pulled the Trigger

I pulled the trigger and proposed to the ol lady this past weekend. As we got to talking about when I got her ring and getting started on what we want to do for our day she asked me what I plan to do for my ring.

I work in a machine/ fabrication shop so I'm planning to make the ring myself. But I'm not sure what I want to do yet, whether I make it out of stainless, or carbide or some other metal. My brother made a comment that I should try to make one out of a deer antler or something along the lines of that.

Anyone have some sort of non off the shelf wedding ring? Where'd you get it? How'd you make it? What else would be cool to incorporate something unique into it?

Make it out of something soft enough that when you smash your finger and you can’t get it off before the swelling starts it can be cut with a set of dykes. Carbide and SS sound cool until they’re stuck on your finger and the MD is trying to cut it off with a diamond wheel without cutting you.

Definitely something that has crossed my mind. The one I end up making will be pretty much just for special occasions. Otherwise the plan is the silicone ones for daily use.

I wear my dad's ring on weekends or date nights but had ring tattooed for work. Silicone rings only lasted maybe a month. Tattoo cost me about $50.

I had been dating my girlfriend for less than 6 months. She surprised me by carving me a ring out of mahogany. (Turns out she would sneak it into the house at night and kept trying it on my finger while I slept to gauge the sizing.) When it was all epoxied and finished she gave it to me. I don't wear much jewelry but appreciated the gesture. I instinctively put it on my left ring finger. It stayed there for about 2.5 seconds until we both realized the mistake I'd made and quickly transferred it to my right hand! We both got a good laugh over that. Neither one of us were thinking marriage at the time.

I made my wife's ring out of an antique silver quarter and used a jeweler's hammer and a small knife to make it. She really liked it and more so the fact that I made it myself.

Twenty years later I tried to make her a steel bracelet using a homemade forge that my son and I built in the BBQ grill. I couldn't get the coal hot enough, so I connected a sprinkler pipe to her new hair dryer via a bicycle inner tube to serve as a bellows. It went well for a while but then the hair dryer caught fire and short-circuited part of the house. She was not impressed...
