looking at adding a puffy for insulation but torn on jacket or vest. This will be a cheaper item I pickup now and replace in a few years. Looking for some pros and cons. Thanks!

I have and use both.

vest = easier to layer, core warmth, less weight, arms and shoulders colder. Usually no hood.
jacket = heavier, layer under or over other stuff but compression reduces warmth. Usually a hood.

if I had one, it would be a jacket. more warmth from it a lot more weight.

May go to puffy Are the fl uncomphagre and sitka kelvin lite. I like the kelvin lite vest too.

The only time I would rely on a puffy vest is if it was underneath something else...like a puffy jacket. Get a puffy jacket and a vest later as a layering item if needed. Puffy to me is a very important piece...a life saver... But what kind of hunting are we talking about here?

Should have been more specific. Backpack hunting. I was starting to lean into the jacket more for the versatility. Appreciate the advice.

vest while hunting, easy to layer and very packable when gets to warm.
jacket when not moving much- camp or just glassing.

You didn't mention what season or temperatures, but in general no way I'd buy a vest before a regular puffy jacket. I actually very rarely use a vest hunting, just have different weight insulating layers and puffys for different temps.

You can always open it up, take it off if you need to, can't make a vest warmer.

Appreciate the feed back guys I will likely get a puffy Eddie Bauer jacket and call it good. Season is mid Oct Idaho for back pack hunting.

For you guys running Eddie Bauer or some other “non-hunting” brand, does color matter if hunting during rifle season where orange is required anyways?

Not at all during almost any season or encounter.

Deer and Elk don't see reds or orange, they come through as brown. So pick up pretty much whatever you want, although my preference is muted browns or greens where available.

Both, but if one is the only option definitely the jacket. Like others have mentioned it could be a life saver! I can not speak for Eddie Bauer, but a lot of guys sure swear by them! I have a few higher end downs that are my go to, depending on the application. But last year I picked up a Killik synthetic down, so far I've been really pleased with it, alought it hasn't gotten tested super hard yet.

The only reason I mention synthetic is the podcast where Jordan talks about hunting in wetter climates with the possibility of getting it wet and being able to dry it out fairly fast vs down.

The best piece of hunting clothing I have was a cheep Lands End down vest. It is in my pack from September until February when my seasons close. It cost $25 and is my primary insulation over a base layer and a fleece sweatshirt or fleece UA hoody. I layer it under usually a Cabelas Windbreaker lined jacket. With these layers mixed and matched I am good from 50 degrees down to about 10 degrees and at that point I will layer under the Cabelas jacket my hooded Eddie Bauer jacket and I can do a dark to dark sit in single digits with wind chills below zero.
