Looking at the Z-5 3-18 and would like to hear your pro's and cons on this scope. The other scope in the running is the Leupold VX-6 hd. Leaning towards the Z-5. This is going on a 7mm and would like to be able to shoot out to 500 yards. I would also like to hear what your thoughts on the Z-5's BT for accuracy.

Thanks

I own the BT version and love it. It's mounted on my 7mag and sighted in to 650yds with 150gr. Barnes Vortex TTSX. I zeroed it at 200yds, and used the Swaro program for the other 3 colors. I was pleasantly surprised that it was dead on with their program. I highly recommend it.

The z5 is only a single revolution turret. Will only go to about 600 with standard chamberings, a little more with magnums. I set up the zerostop for a 200 yard zero, the triangle for 300 and the dots for 4, 5, and 600 yards.

I think the Swaro has better optics than the Leupold, but honestly both are going to be great hunting optics and both should track reliably. I however would likely look more towards the Swaro 1.7-10x personally. 10x is more than enough optical magnification to make long distance shots in the field on medium to large game animals, especially inside of 500 yards. For reference a 500yd shot at 10x looks similar to a 50 yard shot with open sights...to me going up to 18x would really only be useful for the range or varmint hunting at distance. That said, a 1.7x on the low end is going to have TWICE the field of view that 3x does which could be HUGE if you ever use the gun in timber or for a more close situation. Say a deer or elk pops up at <20 yards from you in thick brush, at that point the wider field of view of 1.7 is more likely to help with shot placement quickly than a 3 or 4x on the low end.
