Looking to purchase a rifle to be a do it all western hunting rig. I'm looking at the Proof Elevation 2.0 right now. Should I go with this, a used Gunwerks, used Allterra, or something else? Looking for any and all input I can get! Mainly interested in the Elevation, any experience with that or other proof rifles would be great to hear about.

Oh man, you’re going to get a lot of different opinions on this. They will all work and are all good rifles so pick your poison. The proofs are a good looking gun and you’ll find a lot guys on here say they’re the best shooters they’ve had. The stocks don’t give you a lot of modularity for attaching pic/arca rails but I’m sure there are rails that exist for it. Gunwerks are good rifles too but you can get a cheaper rifle to shoot just as well. I think you should add in Seekins element hunter, Alamo precision and I’m sure other brands will come up in the comments

Ok thank you! Yea my main holdback with the proof is the non-integrated pic rail on the action and the seemingly outdated stock. I'll definitely take a look at Alamo and Seekins.

I think the proof elevation stock ergos are awful. I’d do a custom at price point. Even if it’s just a tikka in an aftermarket stock with a barrel o your desired spec.

I found an elevation for 2600... do you think the other components are nice enough to make it worth throwing an aftermarket stock on it at that price?

Gunwerks Glr action used on the clymer and magus is not integral rail. They fool you in pics as they use 2 piece rails.

Only the nexus has built in pic.
And it’s why I’m not buying a new gunwerks this year.

Oh what, that's disappointing. I wonder if a used Nexus would be worth looking at.

I would do your homework and potentially look at custom route for a few bucks more. You’re almost there at your price point. There are a lot of options out there to buy once, cry once.

Gunwerks seem overpriced for what you get IMHO.

True. Any action recommendations?

Impact precision, you’re going to get your defiance fanboys, bat machine. I have a Mack bros and I love it. Mine is a long action. My next gun will be a short action on an impact or terminus. Yes I drank the kool aid, it will be a 6mm

Ok sweet. The 6mm is an awesome bullet, if I custom build it'll likely be a 6 or 25 cal.

I own a gunwerks and multiple custom builds. The best advice I can give you is to buy a Tikka, put a NF NX8 (or trijicon) on it in UM rings, and use the rest of your money to go hunting.

Seriously. If I had spent my gun money on hunting, I would be pretty close to all North American 29 big game species.

I have experience with the MTR’s. I currently own 3 of them. I have a 25 Creedmoor, a 6 ARC, a 6.5 PRC and a Conviction 223. I love the ergonomics of the stocks. But I also understand each person has their own likes & dislikes. I also have an Elevation in 6.5 Creedmoor. It’s also a very comfortable and accurate rifle, but I do prefer the MTR stock.

The rifles are all amazingly accurate. Most loads are sub MOA, but the loads the rifles like are way sub MOA.

Have you got behind either one? I’d want to feel them myself. $2600 for an Elevation is a smoking price. If you liked how it felt, it would be a heck of a nice rig!

Also, Area419 makes a full length arca rail for the bottom of the stock if you want something like that. You have to get the rail from Proof, but they are available.

I owned a 22CM MTR for a while, sold it to build a custom ($4k gun) 22CM, and kind of wish I had just kept it. I picked up a MTR in 25CM at a similar price to what you’re describing and am really happy with it. Both have been well done rifles and I don’t find the ergos of the MTR stock to be an issue. If anything, you might need slightly higher rings than what you’d expect to get into the eye box. The entire stock has a nice ‘grippy’ texture and both have been very well bedded to the action.

If you’re stuck on a 700 clone/footprint, then I think the MTR is a steal at sub 3k out the door.
