Was out shopping today and could not believe some of the prices for camo clothes. I am almost 72 years old and spent many years hunting in blue jeans and a plaid shirt and did OK. So this next year I will be wearing wool blend pants olive drab and plaid dark green shirt. Don't want to hurt any feelings but won't pay the crazy prices for Camo clothes.

For me, its not the camouflage. In fact, I buy in solid colors when I can.

It's what the clothes are made of that cost so much.

Wool is still about the best thing for hunting IMHO.

Look what you pay for good new wool however, it's also pricy. In fact, most everything is expensive nowadays.

The cheap cotton/poly stuff is inexpensive because it's made in sweat shops overseas. You get what you pay for.

I don't have any of the newer camo stuff, FL, kuiu etc. I want to get some for sure. I was looking at sitka locally and saw some gloves, looked nice, well made etc. They were 149$ so looked around some more and saw some sitka pants they were the same price? Just not sure how that works. Obviously the pants require much more material yet a pair of gloves cost the same?

The gloves require a lot more labor. Not to mention gloves and pants are usually not made of the same materials.
I'm of the opinion that in most things you get what you pay for. I can get outfitted in camo from Wal-Mart for pretty cheap if my only requirement was camo....of course I'm not getting any wool there..

I choose my camo with three criteria in mind.....

fit, type of material and if it's on the sale rack.

prices on camo clothing are at an all time high and considerably over priced. i usually look for the sales especially this time of year as at least it makes me feel better about spending that kind of money!

We pay less for clothing then we have at nearly any point in history. Pick up a Sears catalog from 100 years ago and start doing the math. The perception that clothing is expensive now comes from two things:
1) the social acceptance of near-slave labor
2) a lack of understanding of inflation

As someone who dabbles in making their own clothes, most clothing should cost more then it does.
You can still find quality clothing at reasonable prices that was made outside of sweat shop, but typically it does not have the technical features or materials that most people want.

For instance Duckworth has USA grown/milled/sewn wool products at very good prices, but the fit and features is noticeably lessor then several other brands.

Fully agreed. Cheep clothing is cheep from sweat shops all over the third world. If it were socially acceptable, I'd own 4 pairs of clothes.

so just for reference a sitka kelvin down Jacket/hoody is $389 and you don't think that's over priced at all compared to similar items? I'm not saying all hunting hear is over priced but some is.

Sitka is very over priced for most of their stuff. Although, some of it is not duplicated by other brands, so it is harder to say that.

It is priced to what the market will bear. I don't see Sitka going out of business anytime soon.

Sitka has some high dollar stuff, but for a down jacket that's right in the ballpark. Similar items:

Outdoor Research Floodlight: $395

Arc'Teryx Thorium: $425

Marmot Mountain Down: $375

High FP down has never been cheap. I'd say Sitka cross shops against top lines of the various mountain gear companies, which is the target they are apparently aiming for.

I agree but they are also getting lapped buy kuiu because of their prices. I like sitka gear a lot but when push comes to shove you have to ask is the price and quality that much more than what a similar product costs from kuiu. with that in mind I'm going to save myself some money with out really sacrificing much.

I agree 100% with the OP on "brand name" camo stuff being overpriced.
As far as the cheap stuff being made in sweatshops all over the world? The overpriced brand name camo is made in china as well so it's just overpriced because so many guys think they must have the newest most expensive camo out there and are willing to overpay for a brand name on the label.

The majority of the hunting clothes are way out of my price point. That's not to say they aren't worth it, they probably are. There is a point of diminishing returns. Where paying X dollars more, doesn't give you X better clothes. I just placed an order for a bunch of SKRE clothes. It will be my first purchase in the high dollar hunting clothes. Everything I have is for stand hunting whitetails here in KY.

Pricing competition with Sitka (Kuiu, Skry, First Lite) for equivalent performance value is to be encouraged no doubt.

Not sure I've ever bought any Sitka stuff near full price.

I bought my first Sitka stuff before last season. Bought a bunch more before this season. It is top notch stuff. I bought everything through eBay and online retailers. All brand new. Overall I paid over 43% off list prices. If you're paying retail prices for Sitka you are not a smart shopper.

I also bought a pair of Kuiu guide pants. Bought them direct so there wasn't discounts to be had like on the Sitka. They were right in the same price ballpark as the mountain and timberline pants I bought from Sitka.

I like the guide pants but not sure I like them better than the sitka stuff. Biggest gripe about the guide pants is that the pockets are mesh. I like the side vents for if I want to dump heat but having the pockets all mesh means I either have to keep them zipped closed all the time and lose access to them or keep them open and let the cold leak in through the mesh. Poor design IMO.

Most high end expensive clothes mentioned here can be purchased used at what a lot of cheaply made clothes are selling for,no need to settle for second best.
