Well just sent my eotech's back for a full refund. So I'm back in the market for a scope. I have a ar .223 shooting a 55gr bullet. My average shooting distance is around 150 to 200 yards, 300 every now and then. What's a good optic for that range(brand, power, objective size ect.). I'm looking for accuracy and dependability. I'm done with battery powered optics, looking for a standard scope. Also looking for mounts and rings. Any input would be appreciated.

thanks

What's the budget? If cameralandny still has the deal on the Minox za5 3-15x56 looks like a good deal at $350.

Eotech just settled a large lawsuit with the US Military because they do not hold zero.

archery bum,

A lot of standard scopes available that will work well.

A 2-7 X30ish configuration would be plenty of magnification, IMO.

Vortex offers some nice scopes that are reasonably priced in that configuration, and offers drops reticles. Leupold has some good options too.

The Burris PEPR or SWFA SSALT mount will work well on a flat top AR with a standard scope like a 2-7X32.

that's right eotech is loosing zero in extreme temps. That's what I'm hunting in so didn't want to deal with it. Eotech is offering a full refund of purchase price plus $15 shipping. My price range is around $1000 for scope, mount and rings give or take a couple hundred. Bitterbulls I,ve been looking at the Leupold vxr 4-12x50. Took a look at Vortex, heard a lot of good things about costumer service almost to much about it. Not sure if there is a lot of issues with them since there's so much talk out there about it. I'm looking for something I can mount and forget about it, don't want to have to keep sending it back in for repairs.

I have several Vortex riflescopes, and haven't had any trouble with them. Much of the talk regarding Vortex' warranty seems to be how they cover accidental damage. That is a pretty good benefit. Most of my Leupys have been good too, but I did have an issue with a vari-X III holding zero.

I think you see lemons from every brand now and again.

A 4-12X40 would work for predators, I would just prefer the wide FOV from a 2x bottom end, myself.

The VX-R is a good line of scopes, but they do have battery powered illumination, which was on the "No" list above.

I'm not sold on the VXR, was just looking. Guy at work has one and was talking it up. It has a motion sensor in it also which complicates things inside the scope. Not sure about the battery operated optics anymore like I said. Checking every option at this point. With the illuminated dot I could still use my optic if the battery failed and my zero would still be good, unlike a fully battery dependent optic. You loose the battery on that your hunt is done. CA, you can send it back to eotech for a full refund.

For $1,000 budget I'd suggest you look at Nightforce. In particular the SHV 4-14x56, you can get it illuminated or not. I have the SHV and it's as great as the NSX I had a few years back. Second option if you want illumination without depending on a battery, I would look at the Trijicon 2.5-10x56.
Third, Vortex PST or HS-T, I have the HS-T and its pretty much the same thing as the PST minus not being illuminated. Excellent glass, but my SHV reigns on top.
Lastly, you could look at Zeiss as well, their Terra line is great, and considering your budget their Conquest HD5 line is top notch as well.
Check out, cameralandny.com and redhawkrifles.com for excellent optic deals!

I would strongly consider a Leupold Mark 4 2.5-8x36mm MR/T...excellent warranty and a proven scope on the AR platform...also on low settings can be used for closer distance and faster target acquisition if need be.

I'll second a Leupold VX-R 3-9 X 40. I absolutely love mine! Really the perfect coyote scope in my opinion. I have a few battery operated Leupys from my vx-r to a vx6 and haven't had a single issue with any.
Like you said, if the battery did go out, you only lose the red dot. The reticle is still there.

just ordered the vx-r 3-9x50 yesterday, also the leupold mark2 ims 1 piece mount and leupold caps. Going to be long days waiting for them to get here. Was going to get caldwell lead sled plus, but heard that your poi will be off when you shoot without it. So going to zero the scope in using my bipod sitting down the way I'm going to be hunting. Should be a blast, love shooting.
