Curious on a ballpark price to have a proof prefit installed on an origin action. I don’t have a barrel vise , action wrench or gauges yet. I’ve called around to local gun shops and gun smiths and haven’t had anyone say they have experience with this . Any recommendations?

If a gun smith can't thread on a prefit and check headspace then I would stay as far away as possible from them. I had to pay a smith to remove a stuck barrel and check headspace on a different barrel and I think he charged me $30 to do it.

If its something you think you may do on occasion, I'd recommend picking up the parts and doing it yourself. Its extremely easy to do. Where are you located? I'm sure a local member would be willing to help out.

Placerville CA foothills of the sierras . It’s my first build but I’m sure it won’t be my last so I’m tempted to get the things I need to do it myself .

From where you're at, you need to call Rubicon Precision. Probably only 45 min away. He is an excellent gunsmith with the utmost attention to detail.

IMO, if going to a gunsmith, have a barrel installed and chamber cut the traditional way. You’re likely to have better results.

The whole point of a prefit is so you can do the job half drunk in your own garage with basic tools.

You will see his work and will probably want to sell your prefit and just have him cut and thread a fresh barrel for your action. His work really is impressive.

I used to live in your area, but now am 2-3 hours away.
