I bought a new Sako .270 Winchester and want to load the Hammer Hunter 117 grains. Which powder do you think would be best to start with? I was thinking either H4350 or H4831/H4831SC.

H4350 would be good, or something else in that burn range. I think the 4350 would be more temp stable than others. H4831 might be a little slow for the 117 but I would try it if you have it.

I’ve loaded that bullet over H4350. Two different 270’s shoot it very well at 3240fps from a 22” barrel.

Hodgdon has both of those powders for the Barnes 120, so I’d think that would be a good place to start.

What primers are you running?

H4350 is the ticket with hammers in the .270win. In my 22" barrel the 124s went 3250fps and the 117s did 3310. CCI200 primers.

Did you hit pressure with the 124s and 4350, or get a compressed load before hitting pressure?
I was wondering if Imr 4166 (varget) would be better for the lighter bullets

Loads were not compressed, I found pressure before running out of room with H4350.

Varget would be what you'd probably want to try if using the Absolutes. For the Hunters, H4350 or RL16 are the sauce.

How did your loads work out using H4350 and hammer hunters? I was looking at testing the same in my 270. I've switched to hammer hunters for other rifles and loving the loads I developed. Using up the last of my Barnes before I make the switch for my 270. Got ok results with Barnes and H4350. The amount of bullets I have left doesn't justify more testing. Can't wait to make the jump though
