Powder delivery/shipping damage

I got four lbs of powder from midway today, two of them the kids were broken and both leaked powder out into the box. This is the first time I have ordered powder.
Is this a common thing? Is Midway going to tell me this happens sometimes and is just the nature of the beast with powder jugs?

They do a bad job of packaging but I bet you they'll replace it for you.

I’ve never had a problem while ordering powder. Midway’s customer service isn’t the top but it is good. They’d cover a replacement I’m sure. They pay insurance for that reason.

Ive ordered plenty of powder online. Ive never had any damaged in shipping. I would not expect it to occur moving forward.

In my personal experience, Midway is a 5/10 on packaging and 7/10 with customer service. I recieved an order last week that was supposed to have two boxes of berger bullets in it but it was empty minus the air pack bags. The packing tape wasn't damaged and the box was not tampered with. The air pack bags were stacked in a way that it was physically impossible to fit two boxes of bullets inside without popping one or two. I contacted Midway and they issued me a store credit after a couple days of back and forth.

I've ordered almost all of my powder online. Maybe approaching 100#? Never had an issue.

Yikes I've ordered a ton of powder but mostly from other companies and never had an issue.

Definitely worthy of a phone call...in my experience a person willing to call has more success than one sending an email although they may want to see the damage so take a ton of pics for them.

Well, I got through on the phone in about 12 minutes. I am glad that I had filled out their contact form last night, and then replied to their auto-reply with the pictures. The young lady (Haley) was able to find those pictures while we were on the phone, and is supposed to be issuing me a refund for both pounds. She did say they had some more en route, but their system doesn't show arrival dates and she didn't want to have an extended backorder time. MUCH better service than I had with them on a product issue, and I am really happy.

I am also glad to hear that this is an odd ball instance so I am not worried about ordering powder in the future.

midway is 10/10 shipping time, 8/10 packaging, and 7/10 customer service in my experience. So I'm super confident they'll always make each transaction right.

That said, my UPS and FEDEX delivery guys suck (maybe not them personally, I have no clue who else touches the boxes). Half my packages show up damaged. Stuff inside is usually fine, but that looks like poor packaging or poor handling. I wouldn't expect that to be the norm moving forward. My powder has always been fine.

I'd have no problem using those pounds either, so that's cool that you got the refund. All's well that ends well, and I'll bet this won't be a problem again.

As an aside, I called Hogdon/IMR/Winchester powders and they are sending me out some lids.

I've not had any issues with Midway - ever. Packing is sometimes loose but never been like that for powder.

Had one instance where I didn't know that the limit on bullets is 14 days before you can order again, not over night or next day. I had bought 100 rounds of this and 60 rounds of that - wanted another 40 rounds of this and they wouldn't let me. Did email contact them - heard back promptly next morning - and found out I could order a 200 pack but not 2 20-pack boxes. So got the 200 pack. The next day they were out and have been out since.


OP- Good deal with the lids. I save 1# bottle for when larger containers start to get low - feel better about keeping it in smaller bottles.

If this was in Australia it would have exploded killing 1000's of people. That's why all powder and primers here have to be shipped via registered dangerous goods carriers with prohibitive costs.

That and it's a scheme to add another layer of bureaucracy to make it more difficult for gun owners. I asked if a gun shop would ship powder once and was told that minimum amount was something like 50kg. When you buy ammo here you have to show your license and they note what you buy in case you're stockpiling. They don't want you to stockpile ammo but then if you want to ship it the minimum amount is ridiculous.

You basically have to go to a store to get ammo here. Doesn't help in a sparsely populated continent.

In fact, I noticed the OP's powder is winchester.
Winchester no longer even imports powder into Australia now. Too much effort for them.
I found this out when I went to buy some Winchester 748 powder for my .222rem.

Now I have to try a different powder. Like I've said elsewhere on other threads; if you find something that works, buy a lifetime supply.
