Possible to burn coal in the lightweight backpacking stoves?

Not recommended because of how hot they get, but I have done it. Living in Durango, there are good sized chunks of coal laying along the railroad tracks through town that have spilled off the train. I've snagged a good sized them before and burned them in titanium stoves. Even backpacked in a chunk once when it was frigid.
