Recently, I got a job offer in Pocatello. I’m debating whether or not to take it. Who hear lives/has lived in Pocatello and or surrounding areas. Is it worth it?

I am from SC and I’ve been through the area. I would go for it, lots of hunting and fishing around. Being an Idaho resident would also be great. The east coast is getting too populated so anywhere out there sounds appealing right now. Just hard to leave family behind.

Pocatello isnt terrible but there are better places to live in Idaho. It has its good areas and its bad. Try to stay on the Eastern side of I15 and its nicer than others. You would be in a pretty good area for fishing and hunting with a lot of it in surrounding hills or a short drive. If the job pays and you are interested in living in Idaho, might not a be a bad entrance.

Just remember why Idaho is a great state to live in and what made it that way.

I live in a neighboring county. Pocatello is alright, but there are nicer places in Idaho. Good hunting and fishing opportunities though.

I have hunted in that area a couple of times and like the area. For hunting and fishing it is nice. Great skiing. You have a Walmart, Home Depot, Costco, Lowe's etc., in the town. That accounts for about 98% of the local shopping that I do. Big enough to have everything you need, small enough not to have all the problems of the bigger places.

I live about an hour north of Poky. SE Idaho is not a bad place to live, but I would not have chosen this area if it was not for work. The area is heavily mormon influenced. Its not all bad, but there is a real overall lack of diversity. Poky is better than where I am, but it is still a VERY heave presence.

As for outdoor activities, Idaho is fantastic. The hunting and fishing opportunities are almost limitless.

When I came out here (from NJ) for work, one part of the conversation was that there was VERY FEW other opportunities out here to do what I do, so if it did not work out with this company, it would mean another relocation. Something to consider. Are there other companies in your industry that are in the area?

Good luck!

Can we put this on every single home sale here in big bold lettering?

Yes, it should be part of the Purchase and Sale agreement.

Side note: there was a post on a local site in the valley that showed a campsite where the people just left all their shit - bags, bottles, wrappers, all kinds of trash. The person then reported it to a park ranger and the park ranger got very frustrated and said that this has become a “new normal” in the past 5 years and that JUST THAT MORNING she had to extinguish 4 campfires that had been left unattended but we’re still burning strong.

coincidence? Correlation without causation regarding new residents? Dunno, but all I know is that locals and local-minded Idahoans typically don’t do that shit.

for the record, I’m an Idaho transplant, first moved here in 1999. it was fine the way I found it then and I am trying to keep it that way.

As is found in the front of a great book, ““If a man does away with his traditional way of living and throws away his good customs, he had better first make certain that he has something of value to replace them”

The recent changes happening in the west I am afraid are not of all that much value.

You think Rigby is bad, you should try driving about 15 minutes North.

But...this also goes back to, remember why Idaho is a great place to live and what has made it that way. Whether you agree with it or not, regardless of what it is.

I knew someone that lived there and they commented that it's always windy.

I lived in Oklahoma for several years. It was incredibly windy there. The old timers blamed it on bordering Texas and Kansas or as they put it....Texas sucks and Kansas blows;).

I am about 80 miles away so cant comment on living conditions in town but do know there are a ton of outdoor opportunities surrounding the town. And, yes it is growing just like the rest of Idaho. Some good from it and like others have stated, some not so good. We moved a fair bit, work and lifestyle related, settled for good here in Idaho. Lots to explore and good people abound.

Never lived there but have a friend who moved to follow his exwife and kids and loves the hunting/fishing/predators in the winter. Says if it was "nice" it would be overrun, he's glad it doesn't have a good reputation. my 2 cents

Born and raised in Southeastern Idaho, Pocatello isnt bad but I definitely agree that it might just be an entrance. If your willing to commute into Poky then you can rent south of town and it opens a lot of possibilities. PM me if you have questions.

Live 2 hours from Pocatello, drive through it often and have a good family friend (outdoorsman) that lives there, go for it!
