Pocatello ID ?

Pretty good sized town. All the “amenities “ you would need such as most major stores, hospital, etc. Close to the mountains and some very good hunting units. Fairly low cost of living. Winters can be a little long but that’s like most areas in the Intermountain west. Some great waterfowling on the reservation (if you pay for a permit) to give you something to do all winter. Also only about 20 minutes from cross country and downhill skiing.

If you're looking for a town with arts and culture, you might be disappointed, but if you want a place with amenities that happens to be in close proximity to good outdoor opportunities, it's not a bad place to be. You have ISU there, so while the football team isn't really worth watching, some of the other sports are ok at times. They have a nice performing arts center on campus. There's not much in terms of restaurants or shopping for the size of the town, depending on what you're used to, but you're only 45 minutes from Idaho Falls if you want more options. Pebble Creek ski resort is a short distance, as well as American Falls reservoir, the Snake River, the Portneuf River and a number of other creeks. Lots of public land adjacent, but some of those units get pretty crowded between locals and Utahns.

If you ski, Pebble Creek is steep and a great price. Pebble is a hidden gem.

Pocatello people are as friendly as they come. It is close to both the Tetons and the Salt Lake area ski mountians.

Archery Club in Pocatello is top notch and their indoor range is great.

Have a friend who moved their quite a while ago from Montana. He loves the outdoor life there. Not trendy, packed, like some other places, tons of public land, great fishing, birds and big game. Downers, as above, are that it's not trendy and packed, less "culture" (is that a thing?). ISU being there helps a lot, though. Close enough to Salt Lake if you want a trip to a larger city for a weekend. Depends where you're moving from.

I've passed through pocatello a few times. There are nice areas like any town in America, but my overall impression is that it's a low income area with a meth problem. It's also bordered on two sides by an Indian reservation. I'd be more comfortable living on the border of Mexico, Interpret that any way you want.

Overall you couldnt pay me enough to live in Pocatello but if your going to the Eastern and Southern sides are the better places to live.

I guess I should elaborate as to not totally discourage you from moving there but its not the best place in Idaho. It has it rough areas but it also has its nicer areas. If you do move there, let me know, my cousin is a real estate agent in that area and could help you find what your looking for.

Corb- what different areas would you recommend in ID for the OP, interested in your thoughts/experience.

Over Pocatello? Anywhere North of Shelley. Kimberly is a nice area. Mountain Home isnt terrible. Boise would be pretty low on the list but beats Texas.

Having lived in Idaho and Texas and you live outdoors lifestyle, I would choose anywhere in Idaho over Texas if you can find a good way to support yourself. No question

Pocatello has a few issues but not bad enough to stop from living there. The winters there are pretty bad for some folks who don’t like the cold. Personally I love winter weather, skiing, trapping, ice fishing, snow shoeing etc

Life is short

I harvested a pretty dang nice 4x4 deer not far from Pocatello a couple years ago. Not a bad little town.

I remember driving through there and stopped for gas and lunch a year ago. Lots of Mexican restaurants and lots of Spanish music channels on the radio. I found a particularly great Mexican restaurant, but can't remember the name, it was packed. In think it was in an old reconverted gas station? Some of the young drivers in town were pretty aggressive, bordering on recklous (spelling). It seemed like a decent sized town and most of the people seemed real decent. It's probably got a lot of agriculture there. Bill
