I'm fairly new to chasing mature mules, although I have taken lots of young meat bucks for decades. Anyhow, didn't realize that I had anything all that great until my buddy helped me realize I have a 30" buck. Curious on the gross score roughly.

For reference:
30 1/8" Outside spread.
There are 2 1"+ points if the gnarly nubs by the skull count, and 2 more hidden by the velvet. And his eye guards are over 3&4" .

thanks for any guidance!

Outside spread means nothing for the score, and your inside spread measurement on the main beams only counts up to your mb length so if you have an inside spread of 24” between your main beams but main beams are only 21”. Your score for inside spread is only 21”. Quick guess you have a high 160 low-mid 170s buck. Hard to tell on pictures of course especially the exaggerated angles on these pics. Best way is to just measure it not that hard to do google b&c score sheet for mule deer and write in the measurements and add them up on the score sheet. A soft tape or a scoring cable will usually get you pretty close. Follow the directions on the sheet to know where you stop measuring and what counts towards total score. Either way damn nice deer the velvet and character are cool.

To take the comment above 1 step further the Boone and Crockett website has a score calculator where you type in the measurements and it does all the math for you and spits out a gross and net score.

Looks 170ish to me. Big enough

I have one with a very similar look. 31” wide, good mass, avg beams, longer eye guards and G4’s but more crabby forks in back. He’s 174”. Yours is right there give or take a few inches imo.

Thanks for that!, mind adding a Pic of him to the thread?

I agree it looks to be similar to some of my bucks that are in the high 160 range.

What kind of a build is that with your rifle? Looks to be a fairly lightweight option, wondering what kind of accuracy you are getting out of it?

I've had good luck with ChapGPT measuring a buck with good pics and a common know size object sitting close to antlers or the deer's forehead (for reference on size). Not exact but has been within a couple inches...good quick way in the field.

That's a cool buck.
Use the B&C online calculater and soft tape. It's pretty easy. For reference, this buck from last year is similiar. He's 29" outside, 25 6/8 inside, 25 5/8 and 24 1/8 main beams. He's 173 gross.

The rifle is basically a clone of the ones in the [ultralight ultralight rifle] thread. It's 4.0 pounds as pictured, and shoots about MOA with a steady rest. It's about to get a new xcaliber barrel in 223ai, which will hopefully get it closer to half moa with any luck.

Very similar to the buck that I shot this year. Mine was just over 30" with 38" of mass. I scored mine at 164 gross and yours has slightly deeper backs than mine did. I would say 165-170 for sure.

Great buck !

Thanks! I'll have to report back with the score when I get it done

Couple quick crappy views. His first two mass measures are 5 1-2 “ and 5”. G2’s are 13” and 14”, and angle back before going up, making him look shorter than he is. Has 22 & 23” beams. With a quick look he seems hi 150’s, low 160 buck, but once you realize he has 10 1/2” of total eye guards and close to 40” mass he breaks 170 gross. I measured him out at 174” and change. With a 31” outside spread and giving him 22” inside spread credit on a 27 1/2 inside spread.

He was running with a 192” nearly perfect 28” wide 4x4 with eye guards and average mass. We got them both about 1/2 day apart. 9/10 people that looked at them liked the heavier 31” deer. He’s impressive visually, much like your buck.

@Trackselk, I just rescored him fairly deliberately, 173”, so he shrunk some since I last measured him, or I suck at measuring. Just a touch over 30” now. Most of the shrinkage was in his width. But given the timing I am sure some shrinkage occurred. First measured shortly after the kill, now a looooong time later.

But still gives you a good idea of how a wide buck with good mass and eye guards can seemingly score better than he looks. He remains one of my favorite mule deer, as I as sure yours will be too.
