Pistol Hunting?

Anyone into the pistol hunting scene? Got a ruger 44 mag super blackhawk for some short range only areas? Looking at a Leupold EER 4x or 2-7 to put on top

Only weapon of my top 5 I haven't killed a deer with. Rifle, muzzleloader, shotgun, bow. Might try this year.

That weapon should do the job.

My grandpa gave me his Ruger Blackhawk 44 Mag with a 7.5” barrel that I’m planning on taking out this year. Rumor has it that he used to be able to consistently shoot paper plates with it at 100 yards. I haven’t had much practice time with it yet so I’ll probably limit myself to 50 but would like to see if there’s any truth in the rumors.

This is very doable. It's not easy, and your grandfather would have been a hell of a shot. But it's absolutely something you can do consistently, with enough time in dry-fire and live-fire. If you want to get yourself up to that point, it'd be a good idea to start with downloaded .44 Special and just learn to enjoy the gun without it beating on you, and just plan on putting a ton of time and ammo into it. But yes though - paper plates at 100yds is absolutely achievable.

I’ve vowed that I’ll be carrying this S&W 44mag 7.5inch on every hunt this year. Any deer or hog within 100 yards and I use the pistol.
This is after years of carrying various handguns on and off but never getting the shot I want. This year I’ve been practicing more and going to put in the effort to try to connect.

I've killed a few with a GP100 in 357 magnum over the years, always close what would be bow range. I recently picked up a Red Hawk 44 magnum with a 7.5 inch barrel that I plan on using to kill at least 1 deer with this season.

Great pistol! Those long eye relief scopes have such a small field of view a 2x is a pretty good match for a 44 mag and is much easier to get on target than a 4x and you’ll still get great accuracy.

I've killed mule deer with a 10 mm 1911 at 20 yards using hot Underwood stuff. Worked well. I did shoot from my tripod sticks which helped me be more precise with my iron sights. If I were to become a more dedicated pistol hunter I'd certainly mount an optic.

Exactly about the 2x. I've killed a dozen or so between 100 and 150 yards with my Contender 7-30 Waters. More within 50

Forget the 4x or variable scope....just get a 2x EER or a red dot with 3 or 4 MOA dot. that's all you are going to need to 100 yards with a 44mag. If you must get a variable keep it low power like a 1-4 of good quality. Too much magnification will work against you out to 100 yards. I handgun hunted with every cartridge and handgun configuration you can imagine for 20 years. I had 4 of that same revolver but in the Bisley gripframe customized by Gary Reeder in 4 different cartridges. 50 revolvers in total. Most were customs. .22caliber to .510 caliber. I reloaded ammo for all of them. It takes a LOT of practice, good eyes, good form and a steady hand to punch a 6" target at 100 yards consistently with a revolver. I killed a whitetail with a 50 cal desert eagle at 30 yards. It's been so long ago I forgot about it until this thread. If I were into pistol hunting I'd buy something like your Blackhawk. Have fun and best of luck!

Just doing some shooting myself last night.

Some people don't understand what a good hand with a pistol can do. 50 yards ain't difficult at all.

I also recommend a lower power optic or a red dot. The Ultradot are very well regarded in the handgun hunting world and that's what the pictured contender barrel wears. 12" 44 magnum
