Pierre SD Grouse hunting vacation

Grouse opens 17th of September. I'm tentatively leaving the 30th. I could leave sooner. What are the crowds like opening weekend and the following couple of weekends?

I'm planning to go to the Pierre Grasslands. I got two GSPs. Would like to camp. Also, sounds like good prairie dog hunting.

I'll probably be in the area for 5 or 6 days. Anything else interesting to do?

Usually it is not very crowded on the grasslands for grouse hunting. You may have to move around some but it shouldn't be too bad. There is walleye fishing both above and below the dam in Pierre, lot of guides in the area. The South Dakota Cultural Heritage museum is interesting if you like that sort of thing.

You go to lake sharpe and catch some then fry them. Oahe is bad fishing this year. Fish in restaurants is garbage compared to fresh right out of the lake. No commercial fishing here so it’s all frozen brought in from some where else. Watch out for rattle snakes they will be out especially around the dog towns.

I realized that a couple years ago, when we visited my aunt, uncle and cousins in Wisconsin and drove around Minnesota. The Walleye I ate was in a restaurant and frozen from Canada. Wasn't real good. Can I fish with good luck around the shore, or could I rent a boat? Seems like Walleye are like bass? That would be fun to have a Walleye fish fry!! My dogs got the rattlesnake shots, twice a year. My one dog is snake broke, the other is not yet. I got snake gaiters. I figure snakes are a possibility, but not real crazy like San Diego, or Victorville, my trainer said he's killed 4 rattlers in a couple weeks.

That time of year the snakes get thicker as they are getting ready to den. The dog towns if it’s cool it’s nothing to see a 40-50 sunning them selves. Ya you could probably get some from shore but they are nothing like bass when it comes to fishing them here. I bet you could pay a couple hundred bucks and have a guide take you out then you know you will get fish. Don’t know about boat rentals but I know sharpe has lots of changing sand bars and can be tricky navigating.
