Pins/glue require more hand work... like was said driveing up the price.

Koa wood. I use a lot of guys:

Ben Greenberg at Greenberg woods
Arizona Ironwood
Kiran’s Koa
Xotic Blanks

That would be a bit drastic. But you are likely right. They don’t need to use koa, even just curly maple, walnut etc like winkler

This is Magnacut with a little flex by @feanor . I "custom" corked it, made a sheath, and polished up the edge. For the purpose of a boning, joint, semi flex blade that's easy to keep honed, Magnacut is the perfect use case. This is headed out to @satchamo today.

This thread has me wanting to play around with making some custom knives. I’m not ready to dive down the blade making rabbit hole but I’d like to play around with making custom handles. Is there a supplier out there with decent quality knife blanks? A lot of what I’ve found looks to be cheap junk.

USAKnifeMaker carries a wide variety of blanks. Maker Material Supply also has some good ones, the brand BRISA they carry gets good reviews.

Cork Blocks/Strips

Burl and rubberized cork blocks and strips.

If you wanted natural cork, I'd use flor grade to avoid the pits with lower grades. I've made a few dozen knives with any of the burl or rubberized cork and they hold up fine. Light, grippy when wet, waterproof and easy to clean. The knives I take into the field are all cork and one is on a few dozen animals.

Big Chris custom. S90V with moonglow liners so I can see it when I set it down. Borrowed the design of the KOA caper and increased the size by 20%. Once sharp it will clean 3 deer before needing a touch up.

#1 I thinned down some to be a little more like a bird& trout. 3-1/2 Magnacut with stabilized maple. #3 out of the same wood ,will finish tomorrow.

I like the looks of that blade shape more than the regular. I'm betting it handles cutting the same as the others but it's more svelte and appealing looking to my eye. I may have to have one someday

After years of “not getting around to it” I finally ordered a custom from James Helm. I’ve been a fan of his work since his win on Forged in Fire and he’s a Texas boy to boot. This Benghazi Warfighter in 80crv2 is no slouch. Fixed to my kit as a field blade for whatever may arise. Hard to see in this pic but it has a tan under wrap below the green.
