We are headed to a new spot this year. As mentioned before I have never hunted above timber line. My thoughts are that a spot like this looks good. I have some snow pack and cool temps up high and they can come feed in the alpine that's not far. Does this look like something I should be interested in. There are several areas just like this in the area. Very rugged as well.

Thanks for the second Paul. I am super excited to get above timberline. I cant believe I have elk hunted for this long without ever being that high.

What is the elevation up high? Over 12k? This for arhery? I wouldnt think you would have to go that high after mid sept to find elk. Last year in IDaho, mid sept, all the elk got pushed low when the early snow hit. We barely found tracks anywhere high. Only when we dropped below the snow line again.

Here’s the crappy answer. Elk are where you find them. You’ll know quickly. Glass in the mornings and cover ground. If you don’t see sign then move to plan B.

These are 13rs. Plan is to find a great place to watch. If I can spot some I plan on watching them a day or so is that nuts? Then make a plan to kill.

It is archery. Leaving Sept 12 for 2 weeks.

This is just really new to me. My old spots were brush thickets at 9000. Couldn't see more than 200 yards in the most open spot around.

That sounds like a good plan. In that country you should be able to see a long way and get a good feel for their pattern. Since you have two weeks, watching isn't a bad idea, you have the time. If there is a lot of good feed around, they may not pattern to the food. They'll probably maintain the same bedding area, though.

Worst case, you can run lower and hunt your old haunts. I'm assuming that area isn't a long way from this one.

We've had this same area "virtually scouted" for a couple years now. Haven't set foot in there yet but thought it looked good. Very similar to other areas we're familiar with. Though we didn't plan to spend much time above timber line, there's a good mix of dark north facing timber, aspen, spring and creek heads. Good luck!

I don't spend much time above timberline during archery season, but it's a good place to call from down into those draws. Just make sure you play the wind right, and remember......the wind hardly ever blows the same direction in the draws as it does up top.
