Looks like this thread got off topic. Lets go back to dunking on JVB and these mythical 3 feet wide elk I wish I could find.

Hahaha I love that video. That is exactly how communicating over the internet is sometimes
Well, I’ve shot them with .458 Winchester, 470 NE, .375 H&H and .416 Hoffman, mostly with the .416 which is simply excellent for buffalo. But never shot one with my .338 even though it’s my favorite rifle since I first started hunting with it in 1985. I just have to wait for a broadside shot and put a 225 grain TTSX 6-8” above the elbow. I want to do it once, just because I’ve used that rifle for so much other stuff.338 for Cape buffalo?!
That’s just plain crazy man
500 Nitro minimum
I’ll save my 338 for dik diks
I think many of you missed that I was highlighting absurdity by using absurdity.I think you missed the point.
He was bashing using small frangible bullets. Then he said he was good to hunt buffalo with a small round for buffalo.
Geez guys
Calling the other sides stance " absurdity" is what prevents this from being a discussion and turns it into aI think many of you missed that I was highlighting absurdity by using absurdity.
Actually, it’s not very analogous at all. Using quality controlled expansion bullets that hold together and penetrate deeply, a great many buffalo have been shot with .318 Westley Richards, .338 Win Mag and other .33’s. The 9.3x62 is similar and it’s a popular buffalo cartridge. Neither is very far below the .375. More important is using a proper bullet, which automatically eliminates any and all frangible bullets for this particular task.I was al
I was also wondering what country allows 338 for cape?
338 for buffalo is analogous to using 223 on elk. Which is also funny.
You’re correct, of course. I do find it absurd that some people are so heavily invested in their position that using a highly frangible .22 caliber bullet on elk is ideal. It’s not ideal, period. It works, but there is very little room for error. It’s not optimal or ideal. I suspect a lot more elk are wounded with them than their proponents will ever admit.Calling the other sides stance " absurdity" is what prevents this from being a discussion and turns it into a![]()

Ive been heavily considering the 6.5-7 PRC for a high performance hunting build on a heavy rifle. It seems you have a lot of experience with this wildcat. I saw that you were running a little below 3200 fps with a 25-26” barrel, but that was with a shorter freebore. If I were to run a 30” barrel and a dedicated reamer for the 147-156gr bullets with .220+ FB, what sort of speeds to you think could be achieved with a max/near max load of n570/568 or RL33. The new 153gr TMK has caught my eye. Im sure it will be devastating on game. I’m also big fan of 22cm, speed kills. No homo when I say this…. But I sold all my big magnums. Not that I didn’t like them, or didn’t shoot them well. I was just burning 20 more grains of powder and feeling 40% more recoil for almost no ballistic gain. Then when I saw the wounds the 156 Berger was making, I was plenty satisfied with the performance.
So I’ve had
3- 300 Norma Mag Improved
2- 28 noslers
4- 7-300 Norma Mag Improved
And now I have none. Weird haha. Just a 6.5-7 PRC, 6CM & 22CM.
You’re looking at 3300fps with 68-71gr. of N570 from a 30” barrel with the proper freebore IMO.Ive been heavily considering the 6.5-7 PRC for a high performance hunting build on a heavy rifle. I have a customer that has stacked the game with these bullets in a 6.5 RSAUM.. They shoot really well in mine too. You’re looking at 3300fps with 68-71gr. of N570 from a 30” barrel with the proper freebore IMO.
I passed on the 153 TMK’s after seeing the bullet quality, long bearing surface and low BC in comparison. You won’t have any shortage of killing distance from a 147-156 at 3300fps lol.
I’ve been shooting a lot of 144 LRHT’s lately and they’re also an awesome bullet so far from what I can tell.
I can see why you would pass on the TMK, the bearing surface is actually oddly long. Not sure what they were thinking. I would love if someone came out with a 160-165gr shaped like a hybrid. I just have seen great reports of the 77gr TMK on game. Other than the 156gr eol, what else have you had good terminal effects with? You mentioned the 144 LRHT, how is its killing ability? You’re looking at 3300fps with 68-71gr. of N570 from a 30” barrel with the proper freebore IMO.

Are you referring to the TMK or the LRHT? Either way, what species is your customer taking with them?I have a customer that has stacked the game with these bullets in a 6.5 RSAUM.. They shoot really well in mine too.
I have more experience with the 156, but the 144 looks good also. Nice big wounds and still relatively fast expansion. Starting at 3200fps though. Also have a buddy that’s killed over 20 whitetails with them with no complaints. I don’t have any experience with the super low impact velocity though. I don’t have much experience of that with any bullet actually. Because I don’t start them out at 2600fps lol.I can see why you would pass on the TMK, the bearing surface is actually oddly long. Given your experience with the 156, how big of an animal would you trust it on? Im looking to hunt moose in the coming yearsI have more experience with the 156, but the 144 looks good also. I’d shoot a moose tomorrow with it. The wounds are about 15-20” long and NASTY. Every bullet has either exited with a big exit hole, or been caught just in the offside hide on 12 big game animals so far.Given your experience with the 156, how big of an animal would you trust it on? Great to hear! I really appreciate the info and the quick responses.I’d shoot a moose tomorrow with it. The wounds are about 15-20” long and NASTY. Every bullet has either exited with a big exit hole, or been caught just in the offside hide on 12 big game animals so far.
This was in one of the short blood trails I was following lol.
