It has been a long time coming for me. I’ve been seriously hunting whitetail for the last 6 years. In those 6 years I have numerous stories where I almost had that “wall hanger” buck. Well…..Tuesday it all came together. I had a feeling all day that if I left work early I was going to stick a mature buck. I actually mentioned throughout the day to one of my buddies at work, who is also a hunter, that I was having this feeling. He just kept laughing. Anyway, 2:30 hit and I decided to leave and just go for it. I got situated in the stand at 3:15. 3:40 I had a group of 3 does work behind past me. Sitting there just looking around some time passes and I look up to see a doe running across the field and see another deer behind her. I glass it up, and it’s a BIG buck. I frantically get ready. The doe entered the woods 60 yards east of me and work by. The buck took a different line alittle closer. I ranged a tree at 37 yards. He started to run into the woods after the doe and I grunt/yelled at him. He stopped just past the tree I ranged so I held for 40 and let it fly. Unfortunately I hit him back. He ran back into the field and got 3/4 of the way across and almost fell over. He stood there for a minute with back arched, so I know I had hit stomach. After a minute he slowly turned and walked into the thicket. I knew if I gave him time and he didn’t get bumped over night by coyotes that he would bed and die in there. I got out of the woods and had a long sleepless night. I got on the track in the morning and followed his tracks and sparse blood across the field to where he went in. 60 yards into the thicket there he was, laying dead in his bed!!! My personal best buck and I couldn’t be more excited. You hate to see it happen that way with the shot, but it just happens sometimes when you hunt enough. My wife will be pumped that I’ll be taking up some wall space in our home lol
