I lucked out & drew a NM elk tag this year & will be hunting the Pecos in October. Any suggestions on packers? Would like to have a one or two lined up just in case I get in a pickle. This may potentially be a solo trip.

Side question-I've read about theft problems w/ parked vehicles. Any one run into this experience while out and about in NM? I can't say I've ever been concerned about leaving my truck at a trailhead before, but this will be new territory for me.

Tried to find a packer 4 or 5 years ago, only one I found (Circle S Stables) moved their animals down at the end of September. Their website shows they operate thru November, not what they told me. Drop camp 4k,guided hunt 5k. The Pecos is a big unit with limited access. Most of the vehicular issues reported have been with access points on the east near Las Vegas and on the west north of Santa Fe. I came in from the south, there were a lot of people, day hikers, backpackers, horse people as well as hunters in mid October. We had a front come in, freezing rain into snow,were up high and bailed just in front of the ice, where we were camped got 3 ft of wet snow with stranded hunters for days. There was a warden that patrolled the Pecos years ago, his circuit by horseback took 2 weeks. Sheep foundation had(has?) a salt program for bighorns to keep them away from camps, their packer also had a circuit that my recollection was also a 2 week loop. Good luck.

That’s not encouraging. Any chance you stumbled across any outfits that a guy could rent pack stock from? I’m open to doing that as well.

Anyone that has been in the Pecos, feel free to shoot me a PM. I'd love to chat with someone a little more familiar with the area. No luck on finding a packer yet, so I'm looking at a little more "realistic" areas to scout/hunt in case I need to pack out an elk myself.

The bill of my hat is not flat enough to want to attempt a 7-mile pack out alone.

You may try Bear Creek or New Mexico High Country Adventures. I don't know if Bear Creek is still doing pack outs but I believe HCA is.
