Why should or would Rokslide have a policy? The policy is very clear. Paypal spells it out in black and white. Many, many, entitled sellers believe it is ok to steal from a company while happily utilizing their services. If it says gift or buyer pays fees simply move on. Seller has already told you all you need to know.

FYI, though I did transmit the funds I am not the buyer. A buddy overseas sent me an email requesting I send $155. to the seller so I did. I went to review the ad after the seller requested the PP fee but it was gone. So I sent the seller the PP fee but I am not the buyer...just the stuck in the middle. Some sporting sites have a clear policy about PayPal and their sites even say NO GIFT PAYMENTS, I believed RS was one of them, I was wrong.

not blaming you bruce... its crooked to sell with a gift only demand... I will pay the fees or I wont do the deal, period. I would still sell to you, but i would not ever buy from this seller.

RS does this as a favor to its members! I would much rather shut down the classified all together. It's an epic pain in the ass......The method of payment is on you guys. If someone gets ripped off then I need to hear about it. This doesn't sound like anyone is really getting screwed. Ask questions BEFORE you buy.

sorry to be a pain in the ass to Ryan

Bruce did what he thought was right? He did cover the fee

I'm done, moving on, thanks

I have purchased a ____load of stuff here and never had anything but wonderful experiences. I always remit payment instantly upon receiving the nod from seller. This issue never came up before, I am surprised to learn this is a common practice and it is one I do not believe is smart or ethical as you sacrifice the protections PP provides buyers. When I sell stuff I expect to pay the PP fee. I own two businesses and am very sympathetic to business owners...it is hard to make money in this economy and paying for PP's invaluable service should be a given IMHO. But it is what it is. No hard feelings I hope.

What service is Paypal providing exactly? If it was just a service to transfer money, why don't they charge the fee on all transfers regardless of whether it is a gift to friends and family or if you are paying for goods or services? The service, as I understand it, is their buyer protection that you forfeit if you send money as a gift. That is the only difference, correct? Besides, you guys are all my friends, right?

No, we're all strangers and in addition to the physical $$$ transfer PP does provide buyer protection which creates overhead and they are entitled to collect the small fee USERS ACCEPT when creating an acct. Violations of that user agreement may be a common practice for some but if you are going to a company's service you should pay for it IMO. Ethical behavior means doing the right thing even when nobody is watching...but hey, it's your karma. What goes around comes around.

I know a lot of people use PP as a gift, but I think it gets abused a lot too. I agree, people should plan on paying fees if they want to take pp.

PP is an awful company with awful business practices and customer service. I hate them even more than Kuiu ;)

I don't mind using the gift option as much as possible.. If you use your credit card your protected under your credit card anyway if there's a problem, way better than being covered by PP (which basically means nothing)

THis is NOT true. I have a side company that makes archery scope lenses and have had paypal come through big on resolving a few different issues. No complaints at all. Never a bad experience with them.

You get what you pay for... too cheap to use the 3% option? that's your risk, but i guarantee that about the time you contact the credit card company and say "hey i purposely took a risk and gave a guy a "gift" of 500 dollars in hopes that he would return that favor by giving me a "gift" in return to avoid having to pay 15 dollar fee." They are going to tell you to get bent.

Paypal immediately transfers the money back to your account. Why risk it? Besides, they are providing a service to you that would not be an option without them. Your other option is a money order (slow and has a fee) or I guess you could send an envelope full of cash, thats a great idea.

Face it, not paying the fee is essentially stealing, What do you do for a living? Would you like it if all of your customers got your service without paying for it?

You see the irony here, don't you? You claim to utilize and repeatedly defraud the very company you claim to hate. The distain is probably mutual. Everytime we screw somebody, our karma takes a hit and eventually someone comes along and screws you...thus balancing the scales. Nobody gets away clean...they just fail to recognize they screwed themselves and then feel wronged when karma hits their dogma.

Just a question, with no statement of right or wrong.
Pay Pal will get the same 3% either way correct? Just a question who from?
Or are the fees a different amount when you make a sale vs when you send a gift?

No, it is a free service with no fees if you transfer money as a gift from either a confirmed bank account or money already in your Paypal account. There is still a fee if you transfer money as a gift from a credit card. The 3% is essentially the fee when purchasing goods or services and it gives the person sending money a form of buyer protection. The 3% (or more actually now I think) is taken out of what the receiver nets. So, if you send me $100 as a gift then I get $100 but if you send it as a purchase then I get $97 or there close to.

Anyone ever notice the similarity here with how merchants subtly push to have buyers use debit instead of credit? The merchants save themselves the 3-5% credit card fee when buyers use their bank cards as debit instead of credit. Conversely, there was a bank here in town that had a "Skip the pin, sign and win" promotion going that instructed buyers to skip the debit option and use their cards as credit thus generating the extra fees for the banks.

Anyway, my point was back to the similarity where sending money via Paypal is much like using a bank card as debit. The merchant/seller is getting the transfer of money without having to pay the extra fees they would it had been processed as a credit transaction. So, just remember that the next time you use your bank card as debit, you are screwing those mom and pop banking institutions out of their money too :)

Thanks. the 3% for gift when I use a card (always) covers their expense. The same amount on a sale is their profit. Makes sense.
