I am looking for pants recommendations. Specifically, how do you layer? I usually have a merino or synthetic base with nylon pants (not name brand). Also, I take along a pair of insulated pants to wear for long sits. Do the higher priced technical pants from Sitka, Kuiu or FL make that much of a difference?

I have worn the First Light guide pants the last couple of years with no issues. I don’t wear anything under them because I will sweat too much moving and then freeze when I stop.

I haven’t used a pair of puffy pants, instead I carry a Woobie with me and use it to wrap up.

I wear the Sitka Timberlines for later season hunts and layer with either merino boxers or light merino long underwear. I like the Timberlines because of the ability to put in the knee pads but also because the seat and knees are water resistant. Pretty solid pants for later seasons. I also like the FL Obsidians but they are less versatile IMO. I'm sure your non name brand pants will hold up just fine as well.

Another vote for the Kuiu zip on/off bottoms. So many people either sweat it out, or don't put on a base layer because of the hassle of taking boots on/off, but the Kuiu offerings are so easy to get on and off in 30 seconds. I usually use the Kenai pants, but they aren't currently making that in their lineup. Their Merino ones also work well though.

Ditto...and add Kelvin pants and/or jacket for long sits in the cold wind.

I wear the First Lite Guide Pants year round. During the 3rd (which I have hunted for the last 6 years) I have gone with no baselayer, a light layer or a heavier layer to match the weather. I have always been comfortable in those pants

Depending upon the weather and location of your hunt it could be anywhere from 10 to 80 degrees in Colorado. It can be a blizzard one day and 60 degrees the next! I bring a selection of layers. If you just have 1 pair of heavy pants you may sweat to death and regret it! I have several pants to choose from (mostly Cabelas brand, Kuiu, and Sitka). I'm slowly but surely switching over to Kuiu because the pants fit my long legs better than Sitka. I also have a couple different thickness of base layers to choose from. Another layer is Sitka raingear......Kuiu would also be good. If it snows I make sure I have a set of snow camo. I usually set out a variety of camo patterns and pick the one that blends in the best the time of year I am hunting.

I use first lite corrugated guide pants archery through 4th season and just change base layers in correlation to the weather.
