Pants for New Foundland Moose hunt

I'm going up to New Foundland the first week in October, can you guys recommend a good pair of pants for up there and long hikes? I usually wear Carhartt's out west. Thanks.

When I was there the end of September I used the Timberlines. First Lites Corrugate foundry’s would be good as well as KUIU Talus pants. Also a good pair of Gaiters to wear over a good pair of waterproof boots. You will need a good rain suit to have with because it does rain quite a bit.

I'm doing the same hunt, same week. Where in Newfoundland are you hunting?

I bought 2 pairs of Kuiu Yukon rain pants and plan on wearing those pretty much 100% of the time. Also have the Kuiu gaiters. All my rain gear got shredded or failed when I did this hunt in 2017, not doing that again....

What do you suggest for rain pants that will hold up?

What about boots? Everyone says waterproof. Anything other than muck boots? Anyone run insoles with their rubber boots?

When I did Newfoundland in 2017, my Lacrosse Alphaburley's did great, planning on using them again. The cabela's rain suede gear I took wetted out the first day. Frog toggs were shredded by the tough terrain and vegetation in one morning. 3rd set of backup rain gear also got shredded. Don't take anything Gore-Tex.

The guides all wore thick rubber fishing gear as their rain gear. Helly Hasen I believe is used heavily in NF, but I'd rather be wet from rain than hiking in swamp dressed in solid rubber wetsuits.

I know two other friends that went with Kuiu Yukon rain gear, and it held up and kept them dry. Also seen a number of guys use it at PRS matches beat it up, and seems to hold up.

So, I went with Kuiu Yukon for those reasons.

This is my fourth NF hunt, I don’t recall what on my first hunt . I used cloudbursts on my next two and they held up excellent. My father wore a pair of Canadian made Filsons, their ultra material which was a three layer ultra light weight …same thing no issues at all. We will be taking the same this year. I only wear rain paints when it’s raining and raining hard you couldn’t pay walk around in HH and other rubber pants though tuckamore and all that crap.
Last trip the other two hunters, a father son combo both wear Kuiu Chugach pants and jackets, they shred them pretty good if the sons constant complaining was any indication.

I wear my Kuiu Guide pants/jacket and always have my Yukon raingear with me. Another way I dress is just wear the Yukon Rain pants over Merino long underwear. I go up that first week in October quite often and I will be up there that week this year also. Early morning you may need to wear rain pants regardless if raining or not morning dew will get you soaked just walking.

The guides all wear rubber raingear every time I have been up dont expect to see many of them in camo.

Let me ask you this, what are you wearing for boots up there??? Taking a buddy and heading up second week of october for moose.

Don’t bother bringing any leather hiking boots at all. I had a pair of Irish setter non insulated below knee rubber boots lasted four times up there. Recently bought a pair of Muck Arctic Ice insulated for Newfoundland. My feet were cold a few times in uninsulated second week Oct up there in past. You definitely need below knee rubber boots & good merino socks.

What the other folks have said. Lacrosse alpha burly or similar boot that is right below your knee and tight around your ankle… it is tough walking and a bog where I hunt in southern Newfoundland. No need for gaiters and make sure your pack is light.

I wore sitka down pour pants and was dry and comfortable the entire hunt. I had the Cabela's lock down boots which I think were the perfect boot for newfoundland bogs. I guess it really depends on the style of your hunt but there is no way I'd do that hunt with rubber boots. I'd take a good pair of boots like Crispi, zamberlan, or kenetreks with a pair of gaters. Definitely will want to treat the boots good before hand.

Yeah, sounds like we are mostly going to be in bog. I am planning on a rain gear upgrade anyway, but I don't use rubber boots much at all anymore...................

Same here. At the end of a cold and rainy Oct day, when we got back to the cabin, every guide and hunter was cold, wet and miserable except me. They all wore Kuiu gear...Not pushing Sitka over Kuiu, justy my observation....

I highly recommend if possible you walk or step exactly where your guide steps. The ground may look solid but there is water everywhere around them bogs. You can be up to your neck by stepping a few inches one way or another.

This is very true… I blew my knee out the third time I stepped on ground I swore was solid
