Almost time for me to pay UT some money. I have always put in for the BookCliffs but was thinking about jumping ships to the Pansegaunt. The question I have about this unit is what is the terrain mostly like. I normally like to backpack or at the very least get as far away from roads and quads as possible. And, is the Pansegaunt a lot of P&J or quakies and pines? Judging where it is on UT map I don't really see me hiking up to shoe treeline. I have never put a boot into this country before, thanks for the help.

Thanks

There is a lot of migration on that hunt. You bowhunting or rifle hunting? It makes a big difference. The book cliffs will give you a much better chance at a "wilderness hunt"...but once again, it depends on which on rifle vs bow.

I will be leaving the boom tube at home. If a am able to pull this tag, I know hold breath now with 10 points, I will be able to make a few scouting trips. My buddy pulled one of the archery tags for the Book Cliffs last year, and while he did shoot a awesome buck, it was the only awesome buck he saw. Both inside and outside the roadless area. He said lots of 140 to 150. I know big bucks are where you find them, but some units just hold better deer, and issue way less tags.

It'll be like a wilderness hunt because there are so few tags. The unit has a bit of everything Utah has to offer... plus private property. Good luck on the draw. Ed F

During the archery hunt the deer are definately higher and further from all of the private/cwmus.

How many points do you have? If you have not drawn Book Cliffs...then you got pretty slim odd to draw the pauns. Based on last years draw, 8 points should get you a Book Cliffs tag...probably 11 to draw on the pauns for archery.

Definately better deer on Paunsaugunt. Definately easier to draw Book Cliffs.

Ooh...I didn't even notice he is out of state...out of state Pauns archery is even tougher to draw too...probably end up having to wait until you are max points...18 points last year plus point creep...yuck.

On second thought, I change my advice to "become a resident".

I know I am just on this side of a snowballs chance in Hell, but someone has to draw the other non max point tag. I have 9 points this year.

My buddies buck Green Scored 171, and I would love to hang my tag on a buck like that, but that is the only good buck he saw. I know there are other good bucks in that unit and you just have to work for them, and get lucky. If I am going to use my points I just want a unit that traditionally hold more bigger bucks, with way less tags.

They do give out a ton of tags for the Book Cliffs.
If you are only looking to land something in the 170 range, you can also look into the Vernon unit. It easily produces deer of that quality. Easier to draw. I am not trying to tell you how to spend your points...you should definately research the areas yourself...but if you want to draw in the near future...

Not sure if you have poked around on Monster Muleys, but that site can give you an idea of deer quality on different units.

Of course...dreaming of the Pauns or Henry's is fun too.

I would love to break the 190 mark, but let's be realistic. A 170 to 180 buck at 40 yards in my sight and I am a happy camper. I will look into Vernon. Thanks for the tip. What kind of terrain is Vernon made up of?

It never hurts to ask as many people as you can before investing your points.
To be honust I will probably be hunting my usual spots in NV and CO. But one day it will read Winner instead of Looser.

Verson is mostly desert with juniper covered mountains. Oak brush in a lot of the canyons. Some high aspen scattered around. The aspen are definately the exception...not the rule. I think the highest elevation in the unit is around 9000'. If juniper is not your thing...then you will want to keep waiting.

Good luck either way.

Do your do homework on vernon its a tough unit to hunt if your not familiar and don't get to get some serious scouting in. Deer really hold in pockets and if you don't find the pockets your just enjoying the desert. Does hold bigger bucks but less deer over all than the books.

Thanks for the help guys. I have no experience with dessert rolling hills and P&J. At least up above treeline I know what looks Bucky, but they way Vernon sounds I would be rolling ridge to ridge and not knowing what to look for. Well, other than a big old buck standing neck to a Juniper. Not to sound lazy, but my gut tells me to hold out for the Pansegaunt. I'll still do some more research and look over Google earth. Never look a gift spot in the mouth.

Not sure if you alread knew this...but it could save you a few bucks if you didn't. Your Utah hunting license only has to be valid for the date you submit your application. So if you watch your dates correctly, you only have to purchase a hunting license every other year. Good luck.
