Hey all. Looking for a little more info on the palisades unit. Been struggling to find anything but bears! Have scouted the back side of Thompson peak with no success and scoured those hillsides for a few days. Saw 4 bears and 1 doe. Any info is much appreciated!

We hunted that zone last year and didn't see a single elk... Talked to a forest service guy when we got there and he told us to go down a certain creek until we got to the burn. We got to the burn and saw no elk and no elk sign. Ran into a local that offered to take me to his hot spot. He drug me through one of the roughest hikes I've been on and we saw no elk and no elk sign. Tried several areas in that zone with no luck. The more northern part of the zone seemed to have atvs riding around everywhere so we only spent one day up there. Mostly were in the central part. We ran into one guy in town that shot a nice bull and he said he shot it several miles back in and was in a tree stand over water. Again that was last season, but I doubt I'll be back in the palisades zone any time soon. We did see two moose there though and had some good luck fishing.

Thanks for the info! Were you mainly sticking to canyons and hiking or getting to high points and glassing? We’ve heard the population is low but, decided to try anyways. I have a deer and elk tag and we are planning on packing in 10 miles or so and hunting from there. was just discouraging this trip going 15 miles and not seeing any elk OR deer! It all looks so good too!!

Avoid the summit of pine creek pass and pretty much everything south of there to upper rainey cr. I drove by yesterday and they got the gates ready to start rounding up and hauling sheep out.

Ok, so where these bears at exactly?

We saw a ton of sheep at the base of Thompson peak. Looked like they were herding em for a push. We aren’t hunting until October rifle so just scouting for now. hike to Thompson peak and glass you’ll find em. They were pretty easy spots from there.

Can I resurrect this and hijack it? I'm taking my stepson on his first hunt. We are doing Spring Bear and just looking for confirmation that it will be worth putting the miles in near Upper Palisades Lake and to the East/Southeast of it.
