Painting a stock

A few others I did a while back; my 10/22, and my TC Compass .223 predator rifle.

Here’s one I just did, I found the marbelizing paint at ace hardware store. Sanded the stock then cleaned it real good taped off what I wanted taped then sprayed it

You can do a really neat finish using natural grass as a pattern. Paint your base color all over (I reccomend your "middle" color light to dark)and let it dry. Then grab a thick handful of grass you cut from a ditch (pompous grass works great), spread it out a bit (not too much), hold it next to your target and spray the darker color THROUGH the grass. Do it in small patches (you can always add more). Let it dry to the touch again then do your light color going over the darker spots you did. You can turn the grass at different angles too. Then a light touch of your base color again. Its SUPER easy to do (I have no artistic tallent). Experiment w colors (I used flat black, satin sand and usually a flat dark earth or darker tan color). I tried some greens but didnt care for it as much. You can also shoot through a small hole fishing net for a checkered pattern, or even fishnet stockings. Here's some of the guns I did for friends, they started out as train wrecks so I had nothing to lose!

I went with the sponge method using some of the big sea sponges from Home Depot and I like how it turned out. I was going to try the webbing but the sponge was just to easy.

One I just did on the turkey gun. Tan base. Brown stripes and then sponge over it. Matte clear coat over it all. Came out ok.

Here is something different I've done a few times - as far as paint - you can't beat DuraCoat! They have hundreds of colors and the paint is high quality. You can drag your rifle through the bush for weeks and it'll look like new.

Krylon Webbing paint is hard to find in my area. always had to get it from Wallymart or Joannes shop. i think they changed the name to Marblelizing spray paint now. out of the stocks and scopes ive done each can can spray differently. distance matters in thickness and how it lays so practice on a piece first. usually using less is more.ive also warmed the can letting it sit in a bucket of hot water and it sprays smoother but not needed. another kewl finish is using pine needles or broom bristles from a corn broom.

I was thinking the same thing. Reminds me of a bow I once had. Laid it on the ground in the woods once, while recovering a deer and it dang near took me 15 minutes to find it again. Boy was I glad nobody was watching.

My A-bolt is a good rifle, just a little plain. Decided to dress it up a little. Very happy with the way it turned out.

I’m pleased with how it turned out for sure. I will be interested to see how durable it is. The nice part is though I can always just add to it, or change up the pattern if I feel like it.

Great looking guns everyone. I did my Abolt back in 2013 and it is still holding up great. Like many I stretched it out over a few weeks for drying times for all the layers. Think I did 6-8 lite layers of top coat. Not that the following is going to be helpful to some on this thread based on your pics, yours look awesome. But for those that haven’t painted a lot, the airframers in my squadron gave me advice on spray painting. Keep your wrist looked and maintain the nozzle a fixed position from the item. Start your spraying in front of your object and paint past the item. This will aid in not pooling up paint on the edges. Remember less is more. Just keep layering it and eventually you will get the effect you are going for. Another place to check for the specialty spray paint is Hobby Lobby. You can almost always get a 40 percent off coupon for one item through their website.

After a bunch of research, I determined to get Krylon Fusion for Plastic camo paint for my base layer. However, I have now ordered it twice online and each time was sent regular Krylon Ultra-Flat Camo paint instead of the Fusion.

Anyone have any thoughts on using the regular paint if I pick up a Krylon Fusion primer to go with it?
