On one of the latest Shoot2Hunt podcasts Jake mentions they've now found some paint pens are better than others for torquing screws. Is it a color of a certain paint pen brand or just a color/brand in general. Which is the best??? @Ryan Avery

Paint pen for torquing screws? Are you referring to "torque stripe"? Torque stripe is something we use on aircraft nuts and bolts that are not safety wired, so we can assess for movement of the bolt/screw.
I can see it's practicality in certain firearms applications.

Maybe these since this is what they are selling?

No. There have been enough instances of Loc Tite failing to cure/harden that some people have switched to using paint markers in place of thread lockers. Super glue and nail polish also work, but I've never had problems with Loc Tite either.

Local welding supply will have them. Usually red, yellow.white, black are always in stock. They also make a rollerball tip for smaller applications. Less messy on a firearm.

Any more details on the Loc Tite? Like which product? I ask because Loc Tite products are trusted worldwide with absolutely critical applications and there is a pile of scientific data backing it up.

This one in orange/red/yellow has worked on somewhere around 40 rifles with no issues seen yet…

These are what I got on Amazon. 6 pack of orange and a variety pack of colors for marking mags mostly.

Bought a couple Krylon brand paint pens from Ace. First one was dried out straight from the package. They exchanged it and the next one dried out after one use. Re-used an Overseas pen the other week after 4-5 months and it was still good to go.

Curious about the color thing too though. I've only used orange on screw threads.

These are good on the threads, it's a paste and does not run. Rub threads over it and install.

No clue on the color causing issues either, as I've only used red/orange mainly. Wondering if maybe they've seen issues with the darker colors like blue/purple?

Just anecdotal stuff...has been discussed in many "proper scope mounting" threads like this where people start arguing about whether thread lockers change torque values, etc. If I was a gambling man I'd have to guess most instances were the result of improper cleaning/application/curing.

I also trust Loc Tite and have never had any issues with it, even when long expired/past it's "effective" date. My dad used to bring home bottles and bottles of it that had to be tossed for FAA compliance but the guys all knew it was still good so it never actually saw the trash.

Plenty of discussions about that. Dillo dude often involved. No conclusions generally found. Some just have no luck with it.

OMG!! Were you not aware?!?!? If you use scientifically formulated, extensively tested thread locker on your critical nuts and bolt they are 100% guaranteed to come loose!!

IDK how it all sorts of machinery stays together, but regardless, if you work with fasteners in a professional capacity and you say loc tite works you're clearly lying and part of the Big-thread-locker conspiracy overlords.

Come to think of it, we need to start a coalition. I don't know how we rokslide members can in good conscience sit around and continue to let our airplanes, cars, boats, etc be assembled using ANYTHING other than a paint pen on the fasteners. By not standing up and saying something we are allowing peoples lives to needlessly be put at risk. Think of the children!!!!!

Or you know. All that research, formulation, testing, established history of performance, etc. etc. could be legit, and it's actually the rube sitting at the dining room table not reading instructions, not cleaning or applying correctly, that is the issue.

HA!! Yeah right!!! No way that's the case, that'd be so stupid if that was the answer.

I use the blue lock tight in a glue stick. No issues losing or removing hardware. Its easy to put the right amount one.

Most paint pens are for tampering or a visual on QA/QC processes. They will not prevent screws from coming loose.

Blue Loc Tite, applied correctly, will hold anything on your firearm solid for your lifetime.
