I have a German shepherd that comes with me when I backpack and will come with me this year when I scout for elk. I'm looking for a quality pack where she can carry her own dog food and some small items. Last year I carried everything and would like to lighten my back 4-5 pounds. Anybody have recommendations for a good dog pack?

I bought one for my Lab years ago and I went a little big and he hates it, so I never really used it; I don't recall the brand, but I picked it up at REI. He's sort of a small lab so it might fit a German Shepard well as they're typically quite a bit larger. You can have it if you want. It is a bit bigger than what you're describing, I bet it could hold 10-15lbs easy (obviously depending on the density of the contents). I won't be home for a day or so, but I'm sure I still have it. let me know either way.

Here's a reference pic of the "sofa king" for size, I'm 5'9". His name sake is not from being particularly lazy, but for being "So F#%&ing cute".

That would be awesome, let me know. I'm not looking for much weight. Only 3-4 days of food

My chessie and heeler have both put some serious miles under the Ruffwear Approach packs. They're at about six years old now, and they've held up very well. The chessie hauls the water for both along with his food, and the heeler packs just his own food. I used to think it would wear my chessie out, but all it ended up doing was making him stronger and harder to wear out.

Do y'all have any problems with the packs sliding or moving? Leaving sores or tender spots on the dogs? It's only a 4-5 mile hike in then staying 4 days.

You won't have any trouble with that kind of mileage, especially with a Shepard with pretty long hair. I bet that could be an issue on longer hikes, and you might need to ease them into it. Sort of like the same problem if you took a house dog on a 15 mile hike, you'd wreck their paws, but a dog that runs 10 miles a day would have no paw issues hiking that far.

I found that pack I have. It's an REI Adventure Dog, size Large. Unless your dog eats a ton, I bet this is more like 6-7 days worth of food. Let me know if you want it and just pay me for shipping which I bet is close to $10. PM me if you want it.
