A buddy and I are headed to the south end of Kodiak in a few days. We got to taking about pack weighs today and how much a boned out bt weighed (cape, horns and meat). I had figured 75 lb but would like to know realistic weights from some of you who have been there before.

So how far off am I?

By cape, I'm assuming you mean enough for just a shoulder mount? 75 lbs sounds about right. Meat in the neighborhood of 50# or so and a wet cape and head about 25# or so.

Both these were heavier than 75,, over 100 I would guess.

According to pg 29 in the ak game regs they claim 68lbs boned out meat, I hauled 3 bucks off the mountain this year and I would say thats pretty accurate average weight. The heaviest buck was in the upper 90b range I'm sure(just meat bone in & skull )... Nice bucks Stid!!

I've only packed one and it along with my minimal day hunt gear was #93 when I put it all on the scale at camp.

A couple of those are pigs Stid! That's what we'd love to find of course. With the weight split between buddy and I it won't be bad.

Wow that's surprising...are they really that much heavier than Colombian Blacktails?

I don't know how big the average Colombian BT weighs but the south end of Kodiak does have some bruiser bodied deer. I don't know the exact wt. of these but I'd guess over 200# on the hoof.

There are some freaks down there also.

I'd say a lot depends on the time of year as well. 50# boned out meat and 25# cape is a close estimate for this time of year. November would be heavier.... Ed F

This one was shot August 1st.

This one was shot September 17th.

The F&G are sticklers up there as far want and waste. Take a lightweight hatchet to chop off the entire rack of ribs and take all neck meat. We did not have the metal tag on one of the bucks and the F&G guy says "no problem, where is the neck meat?" Have a great trip!
