What would you pack, 6 day hunt in New Mexico for early September archery elk hunt. I have my sleep system set, need help with clothes, curious on how may pairs of socks, base layer top and bottoms ? Just 1 pair of pants? Do I ditch the rain gear? This is my first trip out west, any help would be great.

Are you hunting from a camp, spike camping, riding horses. etc.? This will help guys advise you on your needs.

At least 1 extra pair of socks and undergarments, as noted before are you out all 6 days or spike camping for 1 to 2 days at a time and moving in your vehicle if you can’t find anything?

If you're hunting out of your backpack, I would:

Keep the rain gear

Just one pair of pants

One set of merino base layers

Puffy jacket

Two pairs of socks for hunting, one clean fluffy pair for sleeping

Light gloves, beanie, neck gaiter...

I would not ditch the raingear. Rainstorms in the mountains in NM from July through September are virtually a guarantee. Especially this year, we've had a good monsoon so far and it should continue.

Early September I would carry one extra pair of socks. I would ditch merino bottoms unless you are using some ultra thin pants for warm weather. My tops are typically the same all season with thin baselayer, medium weight base/mid layer, mid layer (peleton 240 is my favorite), and light puffy. Rain jacket stays in pack all year but it is extremely light and packable. I dont typically carry rain pants unless higher chance of rain.

I personally dont carry a beanie or neck gaiter in September although if you come from warm area it might be a good idea. Also probably a good idea if you sit a lot. I almost always carry some gloves.

The pair you are wearing and an extra pair. I always change into the extra pair, or go “no socks” for sleeping depending on temps. This allows the socks to air out over night.
base layer top and bottoms ?
I always pack an extra seat of lightweight base layer top and bottoms. Again. I sleep in these and hang my others to air out all night just like the socks.

One pair of pants. I always have puff pants and puff jacket in the pack. I leave rain gear in the truck and throw it in the pack last minute if needed.

Definitely bring rain gear- it can rain like a cow pissing on a flat rock down there!

I would add a long-sleeved hooded sun shirt. 1 pair of pants is fine, I would do 3 pairs of socks (my feet sweat), a top and bottom base layer, and a Puffy jacket, which is always with me. I would bring the rain gear and make a last-minute decision based on the 10-day forecast. 2 pairs of underwear, a lightweight head beanie, and some gloves, as well as Crocs or similar shoes for camp. Also, based on the forecast, I would have gaiters in the truck.

1 long sleeve light merino shirt + what you wear in.
1 long sleeve sun hoody
1 pair lightweight gloves
2-3 pairs socks
2-3 pairs underwear
1 extra pair of pants
1 lightweight vest
1 lightweight jacket (I’m a big fan of the Kuiu line)
Crocs
1 pair leather gloves
Rain gear (leave at camp if hunting from there and returning if weather is good)
1 pair of gaiters
1 merino beanie (usually for sleeping cause I don’t have hair)
Skip puffy pants and jacket.
Maybe 1 pair of lightweight merino base layers. I have never ever ever worn base layers here in NM during archery elk. If it gets cold it doesn’t stay cold very long. I like to wear Kuiu attack pants. They work well when it’s warm and cold.

Thank you!

This is shaping up to be a very wet year here in NM. Making up for the lack of snow. If you are hunting the SW part of the state lower elevations, you probably won't have to worry about getting cold. Higher elevation in south central NM I'd be ready for colder temps at night, but should be plenty warm during the day. Same for northern mountains. Oh and if you are truck camping, bring the kitchen sink. That way you're covered for all scenarios. Heck, I bring the kitchen sink even when I'm packing in. I have backups for backups at the truck.

Thanks again all. The plan is to use spike camp, then backpack hunt depending on where the elk are. Been shooting the bow, buying and go over the suggested items.
