Pack holster, what do you suggest?

No worries. The Cordura Safariland holsterI modded to fit tight on my pack belt for my SW 629 classic has another loop under it I can slide on a regular pants belt.

I would be careful doing this. If you carry with a round in the chamber you have a possibility of getting an accidental discharge and shoot yourself in the butt or leg. I know someone that did it.


I have been trying to conquer this very issue recently. I just bought a GS Holster’s Chest Holsters to try out. It’s a lot like the Kenai but not as expensive. I haven’t received it yet so have no idea if it’s worth it. Just another option.

Yeah I’m aware of the risks it was only for a couple hundred yards, no big deal.
Yeah it’s been quite the struggle but i think the guides choice or the kenai should be the ticket

Though I would love to have an Alaskan chest rig, I use a surplus military holster with flap from Bianchi. It was designed for the Beretta M9, but fits my 1911, G20 and Browning hi-power. The metal clip fits the Kifaru belt, easily comes off and I put it on my regular belt when I drop my pack. Flap keeps out debris and is pretty fast to open by grabbing the 'D' ring. Can be found for under $40. I bet a full size M&P will ride in it just fine.

This what I run also got it surplus for 15$. I typically run the flap but also can remove it and run a thumb snap attachment instead. G20 fits good.

For a hip holster on my Kifaru I prefer the Blackhawk Level 2 Duty Holster over the standard SERPA holsters from them because it covers more of the gun protecting it from dings and scratches and it sits a little lower. The duty comes with an adapter for use with a belt, however the 2 prongs are perfectly spaced to go through the PALS on a Kifaru belt. If you did want a better PALS/MOLLE solution, Blackhawk does make an adapter as part of their SERPA system that will fit.

For hunting I run a bladetech holster on my pants belt. With their drop and offset mount the holster clears my pack waist belt allowing me to always have my side arm on me. I carry a handgun as often as possible whenever legal.

I run a zach from time to time with my 19. Dale makes good gear.

What I've seen as far as blackhawk serpas, and I've used them, is your finger pressing a button to release the pistol while also being on top of the trigger guard can have a tendency especially under stress to fall straight into the trigger guard, punching the trigger, which is exactly what happened to ol Tex grebner on YouTube. The footage was shown on tosh.0 even.
I'm looking at this razco/fhf collaboration or safariland currently.
Having a tier level setup is what I would prefer. Tier 1/binos, pistol, survival etc etc. Ditching your pack and a guy still has a basic kit on his person.

since i had a cat stalk me while resting (i discussed in the scariest thread), i don't carry on my pack anymore. i want it always on me. difficult to see but i have a very light weight shoulder rig. it doesn't interfere with my pack and i can sleep with it on. shown here is with my s&w airlite, but will also fit my lock 20, 357 and 44 mag. very versatile and only weighs a few ounces.

i had the diamond d too, first rate quality and fit - it just didn't work with my optics and pack. maybe I'm too short, but under the arm for me.

That FHF gear Razco combo looks good. That is basically a one piece version of what I'll be running with the Kenai and MF bino harness separately. Only concern I would have is how comfortable those over the shoulder straps will be after a few days? The sidearm adds a lot of weight to bino harness but the straps seem to be the same size as normal. The Kenai has a very wide (1.5"?) Strap that distributes the weight of the firearm very well. If that FHF beefed up their straps for this combo then it might just be perfect. (Maybe they did, I didn't read through just looked at pics.)

Like the post above mentions, I want my pistol on my person at all times for this upcoming hunt. I've never hunted in Griz country before, so it's very possible my logic here is completely wrong (and I'm from LA/TX where we have a more irrational fear of getting eaten by a bear than you guys that live up there in the Rockies do! HaHa!), but when I think about the times that a hunter would be most vulnerable to a Griz encounter -

- processing an animal in the field
- cooking/eating or sleeping in camp
- final stalk on an animal (archery)
- dropping a deuce

In all of those cases, I am most likely to NOT be wearing my pack. I know myself, and if I have to transfer my sidearm and holster from my pack belt to my pants everytime I drop my pack - no matter how easy that is to do - EVENTUALLY I am going to get lazy about it. I probably drop my pack for one reason or another 30-40 times In a day. Are you really going to move the holster each time? I probably won't, especially if I haven't been seeing bears or bear sign and/or I think "this will just take a second, my pack is right here". That meateater podcast was pretty eye opening on just how fast things could go wrong.

Anyway, that was my reasoning for going with the Kenai. Put it on 1st thing and never take it off until crawling into the bag at night. As a great bonus, I think it carries the weight of a heavy revolver (480 Ruger Alaskan) much better than a side mounted holster does and it never seems to be in the way.

As far as serpas go i know some idiot on YouTube shot himself and everyone thinks there’re dangerous, the fact of the matter is any competent person can run a serpa without shooting themselves, I’ve ran one for training, speed drills, recreational shooting, and hunting for years, and thousands of repetitions. The idea that your more likely to shoot yourself with this holster more than other holsters is simply internet hype and absolute nonsense. If drawn properly your finger lands on the trigger guard as it would with any other holster. This is not a bias opinion, i run and own, safari land duty holsters, kydex, leather, nylon and many other holsters. If you draw the proper speed for your training with a serpa or any other holster you should be fine. And if you can’t draw safely under stress well then maybe you shouldn’t carry period.
This post isn’t aimed at anyone in particular so please don’t take offense, just want to get the serpa hoopla straightened out

Do any of you guys running chest holsters also run a bino harness? It looks like they might interfere with each other.
 
G23 fist in the rear pocket of my fhf. I bought a pocket holster, just a neoprene sleeve really, and the retention is surprisingly good.
