Pack for hunting and travel

I searched but didn’t see a whole lot on this. In short, I’m looking for a pack for hunting and backpacking, but also for international and domestic travel (I hate taking a suitcase if I can help it). I like the SG Evo and Sky 5900 as it sounds like they can pack way down when they aren’t stuffed. If anyone has any input on a pack that would best fill this spot that would be great!

I utilize my EXO 3500 for international business travel. Haven't been questioned on it other than needing to gate check for puddle jump flights. I think there are other threads on this too. But whatever bag you use should be fine.

SG 5900 is a GREAT choice.

I've carried my Kifaru EMR2 on Alaska Airlines plus another optics bag several times. I probably have around 60 lbs of gear in the bags so it saves around 1 charged bag. It's a lot of working getting through the airport but saves some $. Make sure you check the airline regs for the airlines you are flying to make sure your pack fits in the overhead bins.

I don't know where you're planning on traveling internationally, but you may want avoid buying a bag with a camo pattern.

Several friends and I have had customs agents take serious issue with camo bags in Central America. I also know one lady who got her hideous pink mossy oak day pack confiscated on a fishing trip in Trinidad because "she could impersonate a soldier with it".

The best bag to use for both purposes is a Hill People Gear Aston House Backcountry bag. It's about 46 litres in size - works perfectly as a carry on bag, and comes in a variety of colors. I used mine for whitetail season in November and it will hold plenty for a cold Saskatchewan day hunt. The harness is second to none, even without a belt. This is also important when you're travelling and want to go load up your bag with groceries and beer!

Appreciate the replies! Bag will be in a solid color for the purpose of being dual use. Most of my travels are in Europe. My hunting will primarily be in the PNW and possibly some PA white tail hunting.

I use a SG bag on xcurve and love it, but it is longer than allowed for carry on. It does compress down to nothing, but can’t change the length of frame. I’ve never had an issue but never flown international with it, they tend to be stricter on those flights. On some overhead bins it will not fit long ways, only sideways.

I’ve used a ton of packs man. I have fallen in love with the kuiu 7200. It packs down small enough for day hunts and it’s big enough that you can haul a whole mule deer in one trip. I can’t fit camp and a buck but I’m sure it’s because of my own inability. I have used it for 5 years now and it shows no sign of slowing down. I think I’ve packed 12 full mule deer with it as well.

I use my HPG Umlindi as my carry on / day pack. Works awesome for a 72 hour Fly there/meeting/Fly back bag for work. I put the waist belt on and it's my go to all day bag in the field. I add a Pals Pocket and i can do an light overnight if need be. Can take about 1 boned out deer approx in my day set up. Add a capture clip and i can carry my camera no sweat!

Agree on the HPG Aston House Backcountry. Throw a cheap laptop sleeve in it for travel and take it out for hunting. If you get a belt, get the prairie I have the recon and regret not going for the more substantial belt.

If youre using it a lot for travel id check out seek outside, they use removable frame extensions so you can shorten the frame for traveling or make it longer for hunting and hauling loads. If youre hunting in the north west the xpac fabric is very water resistant as well which is a bonus.
