dbaker, sorry to hear of the poor outcome.

For others, as others have said, use your credit card to make the deposit, and carefully read the contract (and amend to ensure that you retain the best options for a positive outcome).

thanks mjm316. I was in eagle river recently. We did 12 miles from the eagle river nature center. awesome country. from what I gather I would have to spend a lot of money in attempt to get money back and even then there is no guarantee. I was told it would just go to collections. its unfortunate all the way around.

And this is why you always ALWAYS pay with a charge card folks. You file a chargeback request with your card issuer and BOOM! You get your money right back! Hope you get reimbursed.

What a flippiing scumbag...this thread really bothered me.
The audacity to openly rip a guy off; and all the others as well.

Baker, you made some obvious blunders with form of payment, researching refund prior to deposit, etc. --welcome to the human race.
I'd not rest until every penny was returned to me, whatever the recourse.

This is just disgusting imo, have you gotten any reasoning whatsoever as to why he canceled? Me personally if I had to cancel a hunt to a client I would give them my reasoning as to why I am cancelling. I do agree that outfitters deposits do usually get spent pretty quickly, feed, permits, new gear all that kind of stuff. But if I had to cancel on a client or clients for reasoning out of my control fire, flood, something like that I'm going to give out options I can give you a hunt next year, I can return ur deposit, something like that. If I can't do the hunt as not enough guides, horses, camps the options would be hunt with another group but won't have 2:1 or 3:1 ratio, get ur deposit back or move ur hunt to a different season or next year. In all honesty I'm gonna want to keep that deposit cause like said above its probably already spent, but I'm gonna give options and not just say sorry it's mine bye. If they truly want their deposit back personally I will go out and get a loan to cover the deposits and issue them. Now client calls me up and says can't come or something like that a week in advance ur not getting ur deposit back. 30 days minimum then I will usually issue a refund, this guy just seems like he was out to hose anyone he could possibly to get money cause he knew he was sinking and this would get his new business started. As you said he started another outfit. That's kind of what it looks like to me.

update
Outfitters name was Huntley Brook Outfitters owned and operated by George Sabattus. He operated on tribal lands in Maine. He has since changed the name of his outfitters to Sabattus hunting adventures. To make a long story short I sent money for a moose permit and hunt deposit. A week before the hunt he texted me that the hunt was cancelled. 2 years have passed and after countless phone calls and emails to the state of Maine, the tribal service and the outfitter I have been refunded $500 dollars of the total $3000. While trying to obtain my refund I have discovered many other people in the same boat as me. I'm not sure if the outfitters is even in business anymore but just a heads up to anyone wanting to bear or moose hunt in Maine. Hopefully this will keep someone else from going through the nightmare that I went through. As a disclaimer I am not recommending anyone use or not use them I am just summarizing my experience with them. I have read horror stories about hunting on tribal land with tribal outfitters and needless to say I've learned a lesson first hand who and where I will never considering hunting with in the future.

Man, you are way too kind.

Wouldn't "Not recommend?!" Holy cow. GO after this guy with an attorney, NOW.

FYI...truth is an absolute defense all claims of defammation, libel and slander. I posted a story about a similar situation involving a radio talkshow host and his fishing trip/travel business and provided links to the court cases he lost. He stole from one of my fishing buddies and countless others. We're talking thousands of dollars per charter, serious losses! Deposits for multiday fishing charters in Baja were accepted and nobody ever made a single boat trip. He was illegally operating a travel agency. His attorney couldn't contact me fast enough. My attorney told him (in so many words) that he could wipe his pahtooty with his Cease & Desist letter because everything I posted was factually true and if the attorney wasn't smart enough to realize he had a P.O.S. for a client and proceeded to make good on his threat of litigation he would promptly face a peer review before the State Bar. He tucked tail and disappeared. No worries...it's not defammation if it's true. I assume you have documentation proving all this, right? Save it. Print it out and stick it in an envelope. BTW...the ahole talkshow host lost that job due to the exposure of his crimes. Sometimes karma needs a hand from honest people. Don't live in fear. Takes the aholes on! PM me if you wanna really get this guy and your money. I know stuff.

I had an outfitter not call me back all summer until a week before the hunt. I was like where the heck have you been at?!?! He said "I've been fishing" lol This was the first time getting dropped by him and after meeting him fact to face all doubts vanished about the guy. He just wasn't in a hurry to talk to me and knew I had everything lined up on my end cause we have a mutual acquaintance. I just chuckled. In your case I would be sending a letter (Signature Required) from an attorney.
