I have always used a cheap tripod with my Swaro spotter but am thinking of upgrading this year. The outdoorsman has caught my eye. Thoughts from guys that have used them would be appreciated.

Honestly I think your money is better spent on other tripods. They are well built and will last a lifetime but there are many other options out there that get the job done just as well at a fraction of the cost.

Their tripod heads on the other hand are worth every penny...

There is a whole market out there for DSLR cameras, I'm sure there are probably better deals and products.. Check out B&H Photo and other camera retailers. I use a SLIK aluminum tripod for videoing on backcountry hunts as well as taking pictures.

While I have no experience with the Outdoorsmans tripods, I tend to agree with the above posts. I think for less money you can get a solid tripod that weighs less and has a taller max height. The Slik tripods S&S Archery sells are a good example. I also think if you are going to spend that much money the Promaster XC525 is a better option. Heck, you can pick up the aluminum version of the Promaster for around $150 compared to the aluminum Outdoorsmans. Nothing against the Outdoorsmans, I have their Binocular adapter and know they make high quality gear. I just feel for the money you can do better on tripods specifically.

Slik 624 and Outdoorsmans head is about as perfect as you will find for quality, durability and light weight.

Yes it's worth it.

One thing to remember is every single part of an outdoorsman tripod is covered under their warranty and avalible in there shop.

I debated this all year. I talked to dozens of folks and what I found is that there are very few people that can say that they have looked through a spotter in the wind with various tripods under them. I found a couple of people that have and they said if you are willing to part with the money, there is nothing better. I purchased a compact medium tripod and quick release panner and pistol grip head for my swaro 20-60x65 and just took delivery last week. I set it up looking at some sheep at 1400 yards away last Sunday with a steady 15-20 mile per hour wind coming at me from the 2 o'clock position and gusts pushing 25 and tripod all theway extended and the spotter didn't move at all. This is what I was after in performance. I have used cheap tripods for the most part up until 2014 when I borrowed a buddies outdorsmand and that is where I got hooked.

Thanks guys. Good stuff from current owners that have made the plunge. I tend to think there are probably a better choice for half the price. It's just hard to see them in person.

Carbon fiber has better dampening than aluminum. For the same weight and cost you can get a top of the line carbon fiber tripod.

Buy once cry once. You already know that if you buy the setup you will be getting the best. With the above stated with the wind very true I experience it a lot with the good o'l Wyoming wind. I have had a few tripods over the years never the carbon fiber but will say after I bought the outdoorsmans I have never once regretted it. Money well invested!!!

Wow I was hoping there would be a clear winner here but it doesn't look like it. Guess I will look at other options before I decide.

I've tried quite a few and now have the medium outdoorsman. One of the few pieces of gear that is not subject to scrutiny each year. It is pretty much perfect.

My buddy bought their tripod and pistol grip and I liked neither one. We were using same spotting scope swaro 20-60x80 side by side. Him on the above setup me with a Gitzo tripod with the outdoorsman pan head.

Good luck finding the right tripod for you.

Regards, Branden

Carbon is far superior to aluminum IMHO. Aluminum is cold and loud in comparison to carbon.

Checked out the SLIK 624 and it looks pretty nice for the price. Going to try and find a local dealer so I can at least handle one.

It was a lot of money but I am still glad I bought mine. The pan head is a really nice piece. I went with a medium compact tripod and really like it too. I know there is lighter out there but man, that thing is so stable and strong! I upgraded to a complete outdoorsmans tripod setup before upgrading my Nikon prostaff spotter. I think it was the way to go despite my tripod being worth three times my spotter.

I love my Outdoorsmans. It's extremely well built. Sure others will work for less money. I do know that I'll never buy another tripod now that I have the Outdoorsmans.

How did hunters kill sheep before all the modern equipment? A person has 2 ears and 1 mouth for a reason my Grandfather told me and he also said Son it is not the arrow but the Indian who decides what lives or dies.I think of this often. I am slow not Stupid.

What's your point? That I shouldn't use expensive gear because you deem it unnecessary?

I've used plenty of cheap gear over the years with plenty of success. But I spend countless hours a year on hunting and I enjoy quality products.

Just conveying my experience with the product that was asked about.
