Would you recommend the VA5 for use as a rest with a 8# rifle and a shooting saddle like the Triclawpse solo? https://triclawps.com/products/triclawps-solo-saddle
I'm not a big shooting saddle guy myself but I do know people that preach by them. I do think that this set up would be killer but I don't think the video head will work with it. I think the shooting saddle has to go on the tripod itself but I could be wrong. I have just been running it the way I do because the only time I do that kind of shot with the tripod and VA5 head is in the standing or high kneeling when I have to clear brush or shoot over the lip of a hill or something like that. In this case I know my limits for distances and practice them offend enough to know how fare I can make a ethical shot with the set up I'm in.(usual 300 yards or so) If I go to the low kneeling , sitting or prone I us my Stone Glacier pack because the frame is a hell of a rest.

The base plates are bigger than they really need to be, and I didn't want to pay $50 for a base plate I could make. I'm making four of them tonight, and i'm cutting the length in half to save a little weight, and I don't like having the base plate sticking out 1" on each end of my tripod adaptor.

Are you referring to the baseplate for the VA5 head?

So I got to take the VA-5 out today, and do a comparison to the Outdoorsmans panner.

The VA 5 seemed very stiff when I was messing with it without a tripod, but once On the tripod with my binos and spotter it was butter smooth. One feature I really like is hat it has a spring back, so that when you tip it further forward or back, the increased weight doesn’t let it just fall over like the other pan heads I have used.

You can also finesse the tensions better than the outdoorsmans. And when you take your hand off, it stays right there. No need to tighten anything.

While it is quite a bit larger, I think it’s definitely worth it, especially considering it is 1/2 the cost.

I just bought the Promaster XC525C on special for $199.99 from Camera Land. First tripod, I'm just getting it for an option to mount my 10×42 Vortex Vipers on. We will see how it works
